Randhawa spins his web as Academy increase lead
Left-arm spinner Gurman Randhawa, right, followed his five-for with Yorkshire Seconds this week with 4-38 as Yorkshire Academy beat Appleby Frodingham by 53 runs in the ECB Oxbridge Yorkshire County Premier League.
Yet another winning toss saw the Academy bat, and get off to a sound start. A first-wicket partnership of 71 by Joe Root, 40, and Gary Ballance, 34, was followed by a stand of 28 before Callum Geldart, 13, was the second of Derbyshire bowler Greg Smith's wickets.
Naved Sayeed accounted for Chavez Younes, 3, but Charlie Roebuck, 28, and Jack Hargreaves, 25, had useful knocks. Alex Lilley, suffering from a back injury, was another Smith victim for 27. The Academy clawed their way to 224 before losing 10 wickets on what was not an easy pitch to bat on. Smith's off-spin was duly rewarded with 7-43.
Academy skipper John Blain took the required early wicket of opener Duncan Heath, and Hargreaves, his opening colleague, accounted for Sayeed, 1. 35-2. A good position, but Smith was defiant. Younes came on with his medium-pace, and he immediately had South African Dewey caught by Geldart. A beautiful ball which swung away bowled Smith for 71.
Blain used seven bowlers - but persevered with Randhawa, the five-wicket off-spinner for Yorkshire Seconds mid-week. The captain was rewarded as Gurman took 4-38, and with occasional spinner Root, 1-19, cleared up the tail. The Academy had 10 overs to spare, and with York losing yesterday they extended their lead in the League to six points over Scarborough, nine over Doncaster Town and 11 over York.
Today Blain's young hopefuls look forward to their Round 2 League Cup tie against Doncaster at Weetwood.
