Club Statement - 8th July 2008

In light of last night’s events at Durham , the Club face a disciplinary panel which will decide the Club’s future participation in this season’s Twenty20 Cup competition. The Panel will consist of representatives from the ECB and members of their disciplinary committee.

At present the exact details of proceedings are still unclear but it is believed that the Club will be asked to put forward its views on the events surrounding the non-registration of Azeem Rafiq.  In addition, the Club will have the opportunity to put forward any mitigating evidence to try and persuade the panel that this was a clerical error and no unfair advantage was knowingly sought.  The panel will ultimately decide what punishment they will levy on the Club and whether the Club will be allowed to remain in the competition.

A full investigation is being carried out at the Club into the cause of events and proceedings will be put in place to ensure that this situation cannot be repeated in the future.

The Club took the decision to withdraw Azeem Rafiq from the 2nd XI fixture against Derbyshire at Bawtry Road today after the publicity this matter has generated.

Stewart Regan, Yorkshire’s Chief Executive said, “The Club would like to apologise to its members, supporters and sponsors as well as members of the media for the inconvenience and upset this matter has caused. In addition, we feel very sorry for the impact that this situation has had on the player whose memorable debut at Trent Bridge has been tarnished. Azeem Rafiq simply wants to play cricket for Yorkshire and England .  We are supporting Azeem Rafiq at this moment in time and will work with him to progress his application for British citizenship. In the meantime, we are preparing for a disciplinary hearing on Thursday afternoon when we will have the chance to present our side of the story.”

The Club will make a further statement on Thursday evening after the hearing.
