Yorkshire 236 and 107, Hampshire 236 and 108-0 win by 10 wkts

Yorkshire slipped into the relegation zone after losing by ten wickets against Hampshire at The Rose Bowl as another batting collapse undermined the tykes good work yesterday evening that had seen them drag themselves back into the game.

From 45-0 another batting capitulation saw the visitors skittled to 107 all out, nine wickets falling by lunch. Spin was the winner once again when Imran Tahir entered the fray to devastating effect with two wickets in two balls from his first over. Gale was first to go after he set an excellent pace with 31 before Anthony McGrath followed first ball.

James Tomlinson also took two in two when dismissing Jacques Rudolph for just two and then trapping Adam Lyth in front before having Gerard Brophy acrobatically caught by Nic Pothas behind the stumps.

Adil Rashid failed to add to his heroics with the ball when going for six to Tomlinson before former tyke Tahir took over again to remove Chris Taylor for 23 and David Wainwright for seven.

A torrid first session was compounded when Matthew Hoggard was caught at second slip off David Balcombe with the final ball before lunch before Rana Naved was last man out with a typically aggressive stroke that was caught by Michael Carberry.

Carberry and Michael Brown then rolled smoothly through the gears to knock off the 108 runs required with Yorkshire unable to take even a solitary wicket. Carberry hit 53 and Brown weighed in with 46, denied a half century by the speed in which the hosts romped to victory.

A frustrated Martyn Moxon said after the game, "We’re disappointed and that’s compounded by the fact that this has happened in four of our five last games. It’s something we have to change and put right. We’ve talked about it but we’re struggling to find answers as to why we can’t get that consistency. We fought our way into a strong position and if we’d batted anything like we can do then we were in the box seat but then it all fell apart.”

DAY TWO REPORT

Adil Rashid took a career best 7-107 as Yorkshire roared back into the LV County Championship match against Hampshire in the evening session. Yorkshire took eight wickets after tea at The Rose Bowl to leave the sides deadlocked after one innings each on exactly 236 runs a piece.

The home side looked very comfortable indeed at tea with the score on 125 for two but they imploded to collapse from 157 for two to 236 all out, exactly the same total as the tykes.

It was the dismissal of former tyke Michael Lumb that opened the flood gates as he was outfoxed by Rashid, Adam Lyth with the safe hands to take the catch. Rashid dismissed Chris Benham for a golden duck with the very next ball and Sean Ervine was next to go when David Wainwright had him stumped after he charged down the track with a swing and a miss. Nic Pothas and Dimitri Mascarenhas went next, the latter was trapped lbw by Wainwright for 10.

Chris Tremlett was stumped off Rashid as wickets tumbled and Imran Tahir failed to steady the sinking ship as he lasted just four minutes before edging to Jacques Rudolph at first slip.

A tenth wicket stand of 38 between David Balcombe and James Tomlinson stalled Yorkshire ’s progress before Rashid got his seventh scalp when Tomlinson looped an easy catch to Anthony McGrath at leg slip.

Earlier in the day Yorkshire were bowled out for 236 with Jacques Rudolph’s solo effort of 89 the highlight of a difficult innings.

So going into day three the two sides are dead level, although Yorkshire will be by far the happier of the two sides after turning a rather precarious position around to find themselves firmly back in the hunt for the win in what is undeniably a crucial County Championship clash.

DAY ONE REPORT

Jacques Rudolph closed in on another County Championship century but just as it looked like no-one would forge a stand with the South African, David Wainwright put on 61 for the eighth wicket to shift Yorkshire from a dangerous to a precarious position at close.

After the morning session was washed, Yorkshire won the toss and opted to bat. Yorkshire slumped to 0-1 when Andrew Gale went for a duck after edging to Dimitri Mascharenas and the returning Anthony McGrath came and went in less than 45 minutes when he was trapped in front by Mascharenas for three to bring Rudolph to the crease.

Nic Pothas showed outstanding athleticism in flying away to his right to take and edge from Chris Taylor and after Adam Lyth went cheaply, Gerard Bropy made a much better fist of his innings with a relatively quick-fire 36 off 51 before he was bowled by James Tomlinson.

That signalled the start of the collapse as Yorkshire slipped from 130-4 to 145-7, Adil Rashid added only two following Brophy’s demise but his dismissal was more thanks to a wonderful catch by Michael Brown at short leg as he showed lightening reflexes from close range.

Rana Naved showed typically short-lived swashbuckling style when after a couple of early boundaries he swiped at one two many Imran Tahir deliveries and missed completely to leave the ball free to clip off stump.

David Wainwright was much more careful as he provided the defence to allow Rudolph to move past fifty and on toward what could yet prove a crucial knock.

Yorkshire will face tomorrow and the new ball on 206 for seven, Rudolph on 83 and Wainwright on 18.
