Adam Lyth hit a maiden century - 132 including 19 fours

Monday, 21st July 2008

Notts 213 and 350, Yorkshire 161 and 290. Notts win by 112 runs.

A maiden first class century by Adam Lyth was not enough for Yorkshire as Mark Ealham rolled back the years for Notts to claim 7-59 and a 112 run win.

Adam Lyth’s hundred wasn’t enough for Yorkshire folded as Mark Ealham did further damage to Yorkshire which this time proved fatal as he took all of the last four scalps in an all too familiar tykes collapse that saw the final quartet fall in just 23 balls.

Lyth has been heralded by many as a big talent and he certainly re-enforced those claims with an excellent 132.

The only thing swinging more than the wicket at Trent Bridge was the contest as a whole and Lyth wasn’t ready to give it up at 139 for five, still 263 runs short of victory when Gerard Brophy departed for 28.

Adil Rashid did his bit by hanging around for 70 balls before he showed fatal indecision to a Graeme Swann delivery and was trapped lbw for 21.

Bresnan and Lyth turned up the pressure on the home side with a partnership of 93 before the 20 year old’s innings finally came to an end, adjudged out lbw to Andre Adams.

An all too familiar collapse then brought the game to an abrupt conclusion. Bresnan followed Lyth back to the pavilion with the very next delivery, Ealham with yet another lbw scalp as the ball kept low and struck him dead in line.

Tea failed to provide any respite as Matthew Hoggard and Deon Kruis fell to Ealham in quick succession for a duck and six respectively, Yorkshire losing their last four wickets for just seven to slip to defeat by 112 runs and find perilously close to the relegation zone.

DAY THREE REPORT

A day that began with a bizarre double act that took an early scalp for Yorkshire ended in familiar fashion as the visitors lost key wickets late in the day at Trent Bridge as Mark Ealham terrorised the tykes top order in a 14 ball spell that saw him take three wickets without conceding a run.

Chasing 403 to win Yorkshire lost Joe Sayers for just two before Adam Lyth and Chris Taylor recorded a partnership of 73 before the visitors lost crucial late wickets.

75-1 became 75-5 after Taylor became Ealham’s first victim of the day before Rudolph strode to the crease, although he was on his way back after just five balls after a terrific reflex catch by Chris Read before Ealham had Andrew Gale caught by Graeme Swann at third slip for a duck.

Adam Lyth deserves great credit for batting for almost the entire session, remaining unbeaten at the close on 35, he was joined by Gerard Brophy who is also still standing, on 20. At stumps Yorkshire are 107-4, requiring a further 296 runs for an unlikely victory.

Earlier Yorkshire eventually knocked over Notts for 350, the first wicket fell in the sixth ball of the day although it wasn’t Rana Naved, the man who began the over, that took it after he had to leave the game with a stiff neck. Deon Kruis was brought on to finish the over and took a wicket in the final ball, dismissing Mark Wagh for 60.

Although he won’t play any further part in this game, the injury to Rana is not thought to be serious.

Adil Rashid took four scalps in the afternoon session sandwiched in between an early success for Tim Bresnan when having Samit Patel caught by Jacques Rudolph for 60 and Matthew Hoggard who struck the final blow.

Rashid had Chris Read by Chris Taylor at backward point before giving Gerard Brophy the easiest of stumping chances after Graeme Swann came charging down the wicket.

Yorkshire ’s young star then completed his contribution by twice scattering the stumps as first Paul Franks and then Andre Adams looked for big shots but found themselves on their way back to the pavilion before Hoggard cleaned up the hosts innings when having Mark Ealham caught at long off by Deon Kruis.

DAY TWO REPORT

Late heroics from Tim Bresnan and Deon Kruis could well prove in vain as Nottinghamshire’s top order built a big lead on day two with some patient play and a frustrating century partnership between Bilal Shafayat and Mark Wagh as the weather brightened up to allow the home side to march toward a big lead at Trent Bridge.

After four wickets tumbled in the opening hour the visitors were 115/9 and on the ropes but Bresnan’s 32 and Kruis, with 17, batted for an hour before lunch to frustrate the home side who could smell a rapid victory.

Having performed so bravely, the pairs last gap heroics were brought to an end with just the second ball after lunch as Bresnan was adjudged out lbw to Mark Ealham, although he looked less than convinced with the umpire’s decision, giving his stumps a firm glance before trudging off. Yorkshire ’s innings complete, they trailed by 52.

In reply Notts lost Matthew Wood, who made 58 on day one, for just 14. Matthew Hoggard took the scalp after a series of half-hearted lbw appeals went without reward, he finally fired in a delivery that convinced the umpire.

Yorkshire ’s momentum was then stalled by Bilal Shafayat and Mark Wagh  as they recorded the highest partnership of the game thanks to a stand of 103.

It seemed it would take something special to dislodge either of the pair and indeed when Shafayat was eventually dismissed for 62, there was more than a hint of circus about it as Rana Naved pulled off a diving catch, sprinting from mid-on after the openers straight drive had comically rebounded off Hoggard in his follow through from the delivery.

That would prove to be the final wicket of the day as Samit Patel saw Notts to stumps assisting the impressive Wagh as the Australian passed fifty, at the close Notts were 146/2, leading by 177.

DAY ONE REPORT

Yorkshire could be left to think about what could have been after a day that saw no less than fifteen wickets tumble was seized from their control following a promising and dominant first two sessions of County Championship cricket from Martyn Moxon’s side.

A chaotic final session at Trent Bridge saw nine wickets fall in 32 overs but after a superb display in the field saw Nottinghamshire humbled to 213 all out, Yorkshire failed to take advantage as the top order collapsed to leave a game that had looked firmly within the tykes control at tea, swing back into the balance, after a bizarre eighteen ball collapse from the hosts in which they tossed away their final four wickets for just one run was, frustratingly, not capitalised upon by the visitors.

After winning the toss and batting Notts were certainly struggling at 212 for six but more misery was to be heaped on the hosts as first Adil Rashid and then Tim Bresnan took one wicket a piece in consecutive overs. Mark Ealham’s dismissal began the rout when he was caught by Jacques Rudolph, the South African skippering the side in the absence of hamstring injury victim Anthony McGrath was sharp at second slip after Rashid got enough turn to bewilder the batsman and then Bresnan struck to have Chris Read, who made 142 in the reverse fixture at Headingley, caught behind for 19.

Paul Franks was then run out before Charlie Shreck was last man out thanks to a superb athletic silly point catch by the diving Adam Lyth.

After openers Chris Taylor and Joe Sayers failed to fire, Rudolph and Lyth  put on exactly 50 to bring calm to the frantic final session before the South African went lbw to Ealham. That proved to be the catalyst for a major collapse as Lyth’s resistance ended for 22 before Andrew Gale came and went for four as Yorkshire slumped from 68 for two to 72 for five.

Earlier Rana Naved did the majority of the damage with the ball as he took three scalps. His most important was that of Matthew Wood before he could build on a well crafted half century. Naved’s measured ball was tricky to deal with and as the batsman pondered risking the ball nipping back by leaving it, he dallied too long and edged to the grateful hands of Gerard Brophy.

At the close Yorkshire were 72 for five, trailing by 141 with Gerard Brophy partnered by Matthew Hoggard, neither having got off the mark.

Anthony McGrath suffered a slight hamstring strain this morning and misses the match - he has been replaced by Joe Sayers and Jacques Rudolph will captain the team.
