Yorkshire Carnegie lose at Durham by 41 runs in Twenty20 Cup
Yorkshire Carnegie lost their Twenty20 Cup match at Durham courtesy of a batting collapse at the Riverside tonight, denting their chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the competition. The White Rose were indebted to England all-rounder Tim Bresnan, who led a slick bowling effort with 3-26 from four overs to restrict the hosts to 131-7 from their 20 overs.
But the White Rose slumped to 4-3 and 30-6 thanks to a mixture of sloppy running between the wickets and 3-20 from four overs for seamer Ben Harmison, who claimed the man of the match award.
A late innings of 28 not out from Adil Rashid meant the Tykes avoided the embarrassment of recording the lowest total in English Twenty20 history, 67 made by Sussex in 2004. Yorkshire finished on 90-9.
The White Rose will almost certainly have to win their last two games, starting with Leicestershire at Grace Road on Friday night.
Durham’s locum overseas signing, the Australian Twenty20 specialist, David Warner threatened to blaze a trail with three boundaries in a 17-ball 19. But the left-hander was the first wicket to fall when he holed out to Rashid (1-27 from four) at deep square-leg off Bresnan to leave the score 29-1 in the fourth over.
A combination of Deon Kruis, Bresnan, Rich Pyrah, playing his first game since May 29, and Azeem Rafiq (1-24) then slowed the run-rate down. Durham only scored 18 runs from the next four overs.
Kyle Coetzer hit a couple of boundaries in 21 off 18 balls before he slapped Rashid’s first ball, a full toss, down the throat of Kruis at long-on. And the impressive Rafiq reduced the hosts to 76-3 after 12 when he beat the dangerous Phil Mustard, 26 off 27, in the flight. Andrew Gale got himself under a skier at long-on.
Again Durham’s run-rate dropped, with them scoring just 20 runs off overs 12, 13, 14 and 15.
Gale dropped Ian Blackwell at mid-wicket off Rashid, but Bresnan castled Dale Benkenstein at the start of the 16th to leave the score at 94-4. And Yorkshire were well on top when Blackwell (14) heaved the England bowler to Rashid at deep square leg a few balls later.
Home captain Will Smith was next to go when he was brilliantly run out by Rafiq, with just one stump to aim at at the non-striker’s end, from mid-on. And Bresnan’s good night continued when he affected the run out of Gareth Breese, who was attempting two to long-on in the final over.
Yorkshire’s chase got off to the worst possible start when Rana Naved-ul-Hasan was run out without facing a ball after a mix-up with Gale, and Gerard Brophy was caught behind off the bowling of Mitch Claydon to leave the 1-2 in the second over. And it failed to get better when in-form Gale was run out, attempting a quick single to Breese at backward point, to reduce things to 4-3 in the next.
Harmison whipped out Rudolph, Bresnan and Michael Vaughan in the sixth and eighth overs, Yorkshire’s goose was completely cooked. Durham spin pair Blackwell and Breese later removed Rich Pyrah, Ajmal Shahzad and Rafiq to reduce the visitors to 63-9. Rashid and Kruis shared an unbroken 27 for the tenth wicket.
