Twenty20 CUP defeat by 11 runs at Trent Bridge

Andrew Gale was in imperious form with a quick fire 76 at Trent Bridge but it wasn’t enough for Yorkshire Carnegie who lost by 11 runs to throw the North Division of the Twenty20 Cup wide open.

The tykes were chasing 166 to win and got off to the perfect start when Gale glanced Ryan Sidebottom to the boundary before Rana Naved launched Andre Adams into the stands at the start of the second over.

Rana went at the start of the fifth and Gale couldn’t find a partner with Michael Vaughan out LBW for 10 and Jacques Rudolph run out for just two but Gerard Brophy’s plucky 26 kept the visitors in the game.

A Gale skyer was caught to reaffirm the host’s dominance and Samit Patel’s fifteenth over, worth only two runs, left the Carnegie in need of some big hitting.

Sidebottom exploited growing anxiety soon after when he bowled Brophy and Ajmal Shahzad in consecutive deliveries.

Yorkshire were left needing 24 from the final over and fell 11 runs short despite back to back Adil Rashid boundaries.

Earlier, Deon Kruis got the tykes off to the perfect start when he bowled Chris Read for a second ball duck but Matthew Wood and Ali Brown put on an ultimately match winning second wicket stand of 109.

A great day off the pitch for Adil Rashid ended in misery on it when he was brought into the attack to stem the flow but went for 29 in two overs without taking a wicket.

Brown has failed to impress in this competition this season but made up for lost time with 66, Azeem Rafiq eventually removed him after an air shot allowed the ball to hit the stumps but the damage had been done as Nottinghamshire headed for a victorious total 165.

MATCH PREVIEW AND TABLE

Yorkshire Carnegie return to Twenty20 action at Trent Bridge tonight knowing that if they can pick up where they left off before the Championship break they are within touching distance of the Quarter-Finals.

Importantly too, the top three sides qualify for the top division in next season's new P20 competition.
