Man-of-the-Match Wainwright sparks Phoenix win

today. Phoenix beat Durham Dynamos by nine wickets with 13 balls to spare in a nine-over match that did not get under way until 7.30pm because of heavy rain and a wet ground.

Putting Dynamos in to bat, Phoenix managed to contain them to 65-9, thanks to two excellent overs from Wainwright during a hectic passage of play when five wickets fell in nine balls for seven runs.

Wainwright's first success came when he trapped top-scorer Scott Styris lbw for 27 from 16 balls with two fours and two sixes. In the same over he had Ottis Gibson caught at long-on by Andrew Gale, and in his next over Gareth Breese sliced a catch to Jacques Rudolph at backward point.

Garry Park and Paul Wiseman were both run out...leaving Darren Gough just enough time to knock back Steve Harmison's off-stump.

Craig White lashed the first ball of the Phoenix innings for six over mid-wicket, and in the same Gibson over Gerard Brophy found the cover boundary. Steve Harmison struck at 19 by having White caught behind.

Brophy and Anthony McGrath then eased Yorkshire to victory - with McGrath producing the most spectacular shot of the match when he sent a ball from Harmison sailing high into the West Stand with a mighty pull.

Brophy ended on 31 not out off 21 balls with five fours, and McGrath had a six and a four in his unbeaten 20 from 14 deliveries.

RAIN GETS YORKSHIRE ACADEMY OUT OF A DEEP HOLE

Yorkshire Academy lost the toss on a very damp day at Castleford, and went through a bad time in their ECB Oxbridge Yorkshire Premier League match when they were sent in to bat.

Chris Marsden, returning after a long period of injury, shouldered arms and was lbw; Greg Wood lasted two balls before edging to slip where the diving Sacks made a fine catch, and Johnny Bairstow spooned a catch to the safe hands of John Randerson.

The damp wicket and some poor shot selection put the Academy in deep trouble, and when Tim Appleyard edged a rising ball to wicket-keeper Jackson it was 13-4. With the rain falling steadily, the umpires twice conferred, and play was suspended.

Heavier rain fell later, and the match was abandoned, both teams receiving three points.
