Martyn Moxon: former opening batsman and captain. Now Director of Professional Cricket who will build links with ex-players

Martyn Moxon will be Players' President

EVEN stronger links between Yorkshire CCC Players' Association and the present generation of cricketers will be forged if Martyn Moxon, as expected, is confirmed as President-elect at the association’s 2008 annual meeting at Headingley Carnegie on Sunday, April 6.

Martyn, who captained Yorkshire from 1990 to 1995 and is the Club’s Director of Professional Cricket, will be keen to encourage his playing staff to be actively involved in the association’s activities.

All members of the squad last year agreed to become members of the Players’ Association - and one of chairman Bryan Stott’s main aims is to bridge the generation gap, and bring players and ex-players closer together.

The association’s membership now stands at 85, but Bryan wants to see former members rejoin and new ones come on board to hit the magical 100.

Brian Close's year as President of the association ends at the annual meeting, when he will receive a past-president’s jewel.

Taking over from Brian is former Yorkshire and England left-arm spinner Don Wilson, who captured 1,104 wickets for Yorkshire at 20.49 runs apiece, and scored 5,788 runs.

The association held their second annual lunch at Fulford Golf Club in January to kick off a year which includes a wide range of social activities.

Golfers will compete for the Gibson Cup at Bradford Golf Club on April 1, and those wishing to take part should contact treasurer David Ryder by March 28. The Tony Nicholson Memorial Trophy will be played for at Ripon City Golf Club on October 2, and the Phil Carrick Memorial Trophy will be held at Pannal Golf Club, Harrogate on October 8.

The summer lunch is scheduled for the Taverners’ Suite at Headingley Carnegie on Sunday, June 29 - the first day of Yorkshire's LV Championship clash with Durham - and on Wednesday, October 15, the association hold a dinner in the East Stand Long Room. This is their first big money-raising event, and members and non-members can attend what should be a memorable evening.

The cost of membership of the Association remains at £10 and further details can be obtained from Bryan Stott on 0113-2502470 or from secretary Geoff Cope on 01943 872 965.

The association’s new base on match days at Headingley Carnegie is in the Executive Suite of the Old Pavilion. They previously met in Box No 6 above the winter shed, which is now being demolished to make way for the new pavilion and media centre.
