A range of sporting opportunities were showcased to the community at Shaw Lane Sports Association on the 22nd July 2008 supported by Max and Molly Mynah.Barnsley Sport & Activity Forum Ltd is re-branding its operations and staged a Launch Day to highlight the sport and active recreation opportunities it provides in the community. Manager David Clayton explained, "We have grown substantially in recent years, expanding both the area of our operations and range of services. The re-branding will clarify our mission to develop and deliver sport and active recreation in Barnsley."
The group, formerly abbreviated to BSAF, will now be known as SportActiv. Other activites will be promoted under the PlayActiv, WalkActiv and ProActiv banners. SportActiv are key partners in the development and delivery of sport and active recreation in Barnsley.
Many young people will already be familiar with the distinctive red shirted, highly qualified coaches who deliver a variety of sports and health related activities within schools and communities across the borough. Details of all activities can be found at the newly relaunched website http://www.sportactiv.org.uk/
On the Launch Day, SportActiv shared their success with the local community as Shaw Lane opened its doors to invite everyone to join in a fun filled day of activities. People of all ages were invited to the free open day to try out a range of sports, take part in physical activity taster sessions and receive health advice. The day included not only mainstream sports such as football, cricket and rugby, but also the PlayActiv Play Van, Healthy Bones/Chairobics, CheerFit and Hula Classes.
Information stands contained all you could need to know on leisure and healthy eating from SportActiv partners Fit For The Future and Barnsley Primary Care Trust.
Local sports stars Michael Coulson from Barnsley Football Club and England Womens Cricket International Kath Brunt were on hand to assist SportActiv coaches in masterclass sessions as well as sign autographs and offer advice to the next generation of sporting stars. There were also surprise appearances from Max and Molly Mynah and Toby Tyke from Barnsley FC to hand out prizes.
Kath Brunt commented on the launch; "The day was a tremendous success and I was pleased to see so many boys and girls so enthusiastic about cricket and sport in general. I started out my cricketing career at a similar grassroots program so was thrilled to offer advice and tips to these budding stars. I would like to thank SportActiv for inviting me to attend and was delighted to become the inaugural SportActiv Ambassador."
