Yorkshire CCC Southern Group
Batsman/wicketkeeper Jonathan Bairstow receives Yorkshire County Cricket Club Southern Group's Neil Lloyd Young Cricketer of the Year Award 2009 from Group chairman Mike Brown.
Jonathan was presented with a cheque for £250 in addition to the silver salver during the 2010 Roses match at Headingley Carnegie.
The 2010 winner was Adam Lyth, and a presentation will be made to Adam when the Southern Group visit Headingley Carnegie on Friday, September 9."
The award is made annually in memory of Wakefield-born left-hand batsman Neil, who played for Yorkshire Second XI and England Young Cricketers, but who died aged 17 in 1982 from an infection caused by a rare virus. Past winners include former Yorkshire skippers Martyn Moxon and Darren Gough and Tim Bresnan.
MISSION STATEMENT By DAVID WOOD
The Southern Group - which celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 2005 - was formed to give Yorkshire cricket followers living in the South of England an opportunity to meet and support the county club. During the season we arrange facilities at many of Yorkshire’s fixtures in the south. This can include lunch or private viewing facilities.
In the winter we hold various events including informal evenings with the players or other key figures from the County Club. An Annual Dinner or Lunch is held each autumn in London, and our recent guests have included Stewart Regan, Stephen Green, Colin Graves, Christopher Martin-Jenkins, David Byas and many of the players.
We are also active in providing financial support to the players. In the past this has included full support of the benefit funds and awards to a Young Cricketer of the Year. However, our main contribution is assisting the development of young players. This has included sponsorship to allow youngsters to play overseas in the winter.
Our first such recipient was Paul Jarvis in 1984, and over the next 16 years we sponsored 14 players including Darren Gough in 1990.
In 1997 we provided sponsorship for a new initiative which allowed the Academy staff to benefit from off-the-field inter-personal skills training, and in 1999 we provided funds towards coaching mats. In 2003 we were able to provide bats for scholarship players, and in 2004 we again provided funds to help the Academy. In 2005 we sponsored members of the Young Fast Bowling Development Squad.
Southern Group members receive a quarterly newsletter, and are able to buy the group tie or unisex pin which bear the Group logo of SG below a white rose. Membership is by donation each year, and we are currently asking for a minimum of £7.
