100 and three wickets for Ross in Academy triumph

Full ground at 2009 Test

George Ross will remember yesterday’s trip to Barnsley for his century in 79 minutes and three wickets as Yorkshire Academy trounced their Derby counterparts by 122 runs.

Alex Lees and Callum Geldart strengthened this mid-week friendly team, and when Alex won the toss they opened. They had put on 72 when Lees, 11, was bowled by Tom Knight, the former Rotherham left-arm spinner. Geldart then had 50, scored at a very quick rate with Lees prepared to let him have the strike.

Callum was the next victim to fall to Knight, a fine caught-and-bowled ending his innings of 77 with 11 fours. It was a splendid knock - 128 being scored in 23.2 overs. Ross and Jack Leaning then came together, and the total raced to 243. It was a fine partnership, Ross dominating the bowlers who wilted under the pressure this pair created.

Leaning's 35 in 47 balls was quick…but it was put in the shade by Ross – whose 100 came up in 79 balls with 11 fours and three towering sixes over the sight screen. Alex Lilley piled on the pressure with 35 in 29 balls, and at 50 overs the Academy had reached a superb 322-7.

Things did not improve after the break. Derbyshire opener Goodacre managed 34, but he was unable to force the pace and followed Hamilton back to the pavilion. Burgoyne went for 30.  The quicker bowlers took five of the wickets to fall and a good piece of fielding by Leaning earned a run-out.

Ross went on to have an excellent day with the ball: he finished with 3-30 in his 56 overs, and Alex Leyshon chipped in with his left-arm spin. The Derby innings ended with a catch in the deep by Jonathan Moxon.

Victory by 122 runs. A mid-week improvement to follow three excellent League victories.
