Gary Ballance, whose 67 piloted Yorkshire to a nerve-tingling triumph

Gary Ballance, above, starred with 67 - but victory by one wicket with one ball to spare had the spectators biting their nails as Yorkshire stumbled from a seemingly winning position of 151-4 to 197-9, five wickets going down for 48 runs.

Ritchie Bresnan, joined by last man Moin Ashraf with two balls to go and with the scores level, survived an lbw appeal - and the batsmen ran a winning leg-bye to avenge the only defeat the Seconds lost last season in the Trophy.

Batting at Yorkshire's invitation, Nottinghamshire lost their first wicket to the sixth ball of the innings and their second 16 balls later. The shaky start was compounded by the retirement of Matthew Wood, the former Somerset player of that ilk, hit on the elbow by Moin Ashraf - an X-ray revealed a severe bruise, and the batsman played no further part.

Lancastrian exile Steven Mullaney rode to the rescue: entering the lists at No. 5, he saw wicket after wicket fall at the other end - but his contribution of 85, at marginally less than a run a ball, saw a reasonable total of 197 posted when the innings closed in the 42nd over. The best of the Yorkshire bowlers were Lee Hodgson, his three wickets costing 31 runs, and Azeem Rafiq whose three wickets cost five runs more.

Yorkshire’s reply began solidly enough until Joe Root was dismissed for the fifth time in his five innings in Yorkshire Second Elevenmatches, leg before. Ballance kept going until he became first in the five-wicket rush which almost precipitated a Yorkshire defeat.

Today at the same Nottinghamshire Sports Club venue the two begin their annual three-day Championship fixture. A less dramatic match will help to soothe the nerves, frayed by that tumble of wickets in the late afternoon.
