2ND XI: Glamorgan win despite Billy Root 69

No Media Found

This was last Trophy match of the season with nothing at stake except personal and team pride in a match well played. And the Welsh weather had a say in it too, the start being delayed to 2.30 and the overs reduced by a third to 33-a-side.

Glamorgan, or Criced Morgannwg as it is known in the Principality, won the toss and invited Yorkshire to bat in the former Sophia Gardens ground, redeveloped in the immediate past into The SWALEC Stadium, the capital letters denoting its perceived importance in the grand scheme of things

Billy Root faced the second ball of the innings after brother Joe was bowled by the first. It was a century of runs and more before the next wicket fell, Billy passing the fifty mark before Callum Geldart’s lost his wicket in the twenty-second over

Wickets fell regularly in the remaining eleven overs as seventy more runs were added to the score. Billy was caught off a skier with 69 runs to his name. Lee Hodgson and James Lee both added runs at more than one a ball as did Gurman Randhawa but there was nothing of great consequence to report

The final total of 176 should not have presented too many problems to the experienced Glamorgan batsmen and indeed it did not. Gareth Rees, a thousand first-class runs last season, shepherded Daniel Roberts, a relative newcomer in his second Second Eleven season, through a partnership of 80 until the youngster was caught and bowled off Joe Root’s second delivery

Another eighty runs were added by Rees and Dion Holden, another second year tyro, before the youngster was also caught and bowled, in Alex Lilley’s fourth over. At the fall of that wicket, seventeen runs were still required off the twenty-seven balls remaining. Nine remained when Rees hit a four to take him past the century mark and to level the scores

A single off the next ball secured the victory for Glamorgan and confirmed their third place in the group, the Yorkies finishing in the middle of the table. It’s twelve months since the victory in the Trophy final at Scarborough; is it twelve months to the next one? We shall see……………….
