It was a good all-round performance that won the day at Headingley Carnegie for Yorkshire in their Second Eleven Trophy match against Durham.

But winning the toss and electing to field, perhaps, seemed not the best decision as the visitors passed the fifty mark in the first powerplay. A couple of wickets though swung it back to the Yorkshire way or did it, as another partnership built.

At 99-2 off 21 overs, the bat was winning but Will Smith was the tempted to snick one behind to Jordan Lowe by Lee Hodgson. That was the cue for the spinners to come on. Bowling from the Kirkstall Lane end, David Wainwright picked up four wickets at a measly cost of 25 runs. His partner in crime, Gurman Randhawa, picked up the other three at an even miserly cost of 17 runs and Durham were bowled out with eight overs to spare for 147 runs on the board

Such a total, less than three an over, would seem an easy target to achieve but with both Yorkshire openers dismissed with only a dozen runs on the board, it seemed that there might be a sting in the tail. It was not to be, though, as Callum Geldart and Lee Hodgson forged a ninety run partnership before Hodgson was bowled, two short of his half century. Geldart passed that mark before he, too, was dismissed, trapped leg before by Smith

But, apart from Wainwright being run out, that was that. The target was passed with five wickets in hand and nine overs to spare. A good win but sadly too late to push Yorkshire into the semi-finals.

That will have to wait for another day...
