ACAD: Century, wickets and catches for Rhodes

The sun shone today on Yorkshire Academy’s Will Rhodes, above, with 131 runs, four catches and 2-30 as the Colts beat Rotherham by 85 runs to finish fourth in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League.
Originally scheduled as Rotherham’s home fixture, this match was played at
Weetwood. Sun – yes, really! - greeted the teams, and the Academy’s decision to bat meant a long afternoon in the field for their guests.
Eliot Callis and Jonathan Tattersall enjoyed a fine opening partnership of 34, but left-arm seamer Archie Ogden had Callis caught low down at slip by Ben Sanderson. Four balls later Ogden trapped skipper Jack Leaning in front.
This brought the in-form Rhodes to the crease, and the scoring rate immediately quickened. A superb third-wicket partnership had reached 105 when Gurman Randhawa’s spin snared Tattersall: the batsmen tried to drive – but smacked a catch straight back to the bowler. His splendid 50 had come in 89 balls.
Rhodes at the other end played a chanceless innings. His 50 came in 51 balls. His on-driving was timed to perfection, and he reached 90 in 101 deliveries. He was joined by wicket-keeper Eddie Wilson, and the pair were three short of a century partnership when Wilson skied left-arm spinner Oliver Jackson to deep-square-leg and James Schofield took a fine catch. 236-4.
Rhodes and Mosun Hussain added 42, but Ogden at last bowled Rhodes, whose 131 was made with a full range of shots off 125 balls with 14 fours. He came off to loud applause, his last two innings having totalled 212. Jackson took 2-76, but it was the Academy who enjoyed their tea. An incomplete or outright win would lift them over Rotherham into fourth place.
Skipper James Moorehouse and Randhawa made a good start, totalling 48 before Ben Coad beat the quicker-scoring Moorehouse, who was snapped up by Wilson. 48-1. Three balls later No. 3 Stuart Guy fell to Karl Carver’s spin – Rhodes at slip taking the catch.
Randhawa hung his bat out to dry - and fed an easy catch to Rhodes at gully. 59-3. James Schofield took a wild swing at off-spinner Leaning - and first-slip Rhodes again obliged. Fourth place now looked a distinct possibility, but a positive innings of 52 in 46 balls from Jordan Lowe took the visitors to 132-5.
Tattersall, patrolling the deep-mid-wicket boundary raised Academy hopes
with a fine catch...the bowler? Rhodes! Nathan Smith hit 32 in 22 balls with two fours and two sixes, but was caught by Leaning at mid-wicket...the bowler? Rhodes.
Ben Sanderson lasted three balls, and Jackson was caught at slip by Rhodes when Carver returned to the attack. Rotherham hoisted 200, but two balls later No. 10 Staveley slashed across the line to give Tattersall his second wicket, and the Academy were home.
A fine finish to the season with eight points and fourth place. This last dry weekend has shown that this is a more-than-useful team. Let us hope that the improvement continues in 2013.
