ACAD: Eddie Wilson 83 and another eight-point win

A grand 83 from wicket-keeper/batsman Eddie Wilson, above, helped Yorkshire Academy to victory by 92 runs against Driffield at Weetwood and a further eight points in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB Premier League.
Winning the toss and losing three wickets for 10 runs made one wonder if Academy skipper Jack Leaning had called correctly. Jonathan Tattersall played back and got a thin edge behind to wicket-keeper Goddard for a duck; Eliot Callis played across the line to be lbw to Tom Chippendale for four, and then Leaning himself was caught at third slip off Halder for three.
George Ross, 33, and Wilson, 83, staged a fine recovery, putting on 100 at a run a ball. As often happens, the pitch suddenly looked a lot easier and Ross fell to Chippendale trying to force the pace. Care was still need by the batsmen. Will Rhodes and Wilson ran well – Wilson’s innings ranking with a fine knock played at York earlier this season.
Scoring at a run a ball eased the tension, but a poor call saw Rhodes run out, and Ollie Ezard bowled Wilson for a fine 83 off 98 balls. Coad picked up valuable singles, but he was caught off the last-but-one ball of the innings. 227 had not looked likely at 9-3. A good recovery.
With Sam Drury missing because of injury, Matt Clarkson and George Drury opened for Driffield, and the early breakthrough came - Clarkson caught at slip by Rhodes off Coad. Wilson snapped up the valuable wicket of Aamer Sajjad for three, and when Drury slightly hesitated he was run out for eight. 26-3.
Driffield’s troubles mounted as Stabler took two wickets: Rhodes took a splendid diving catch at slip to dismiss Danny Broumpton, and Halder was trapped in front. A third wicket fell at 31 when Coad had Kohler-Cadmore caught at the wicket by Wilson.
Nick Hardgrave proved more difficult to dislodge – advancing to 80 before he was bowled by Tattersall – but his fine innings was not backed up by the other batsmen. The bowling tired, and it was left to off-spinner Leaning and leg-spinner Tattersall to pick up a wicket each to send Driffield back to East Yorkshire with no points.
A great team effort, and the full eight points to Yorkshire Academy.
