ACAD: For want of a vital catch the cup was lost

A fighting top-score 34 from Ryan Gibson, above, was not enough to keep alive Yorkshire Academy’s hopes of retaining the Solly Sports Yorkshire County ECB Premier League Cup which they won so handsomely last year.
The Colts put behind them the disappointment of Saturday, when their League match with Cleethorpes was cancelled as early as 1pm water because of water which had got under the covers at Weetwood during the incessant rain. They arrived yesterday (Sunday) at Driffield with the sun on their backs, elected to field, and put the hosts out for 149 in 39 overs. The Academy then crashed for 97, leaving Driffield to go through by 52 runs.
Everything started well as Driffield slumped to 45-6 with only 15-year-old George Drury reaching double figures. It looked like Lewis Stabler’s day as he had three wickets in the bag and was to grab two more. Too good to be true, unfortunately.
Still batting soundly was No.3 Aamer Sajjad, the Driffield overseas player, who had survived one chance when he was in single figures. He found a partner in the No.10, skipper David Brent, who took 20 balls to get off the mark but stayed for a further 15 before he was caught at second slip by Jack Leaning off…yes…Lewis Stabler.
The ninth-wicket partnership took Drffield from 67 to 133, and 16 more runs were added for the last wicket to set Yorkshire a target of 150. The man who had turned it round, Sajjad, struck 90 before he was caught, including 10 fours and five sixes. An excellent knock which gave Driffield its chance.
Stabler finished with his best figures for the Academy of 5-10 in 6.4 overs, but now they needed a good start from the batsmen. At 13 Leaning was bowled by Ozzie Ezard, and Jonathan Tattersall was caught behind eight balls later.
George Ross fell three runs later, and it was 29-3. Eddie Wilson came and went – but Ezard could not complete the hat-trick. No.3 Mosun Hussain and Gibson tried to repair the damage, but at 51 Hardgrave trapped Hussain in front. Drury was introduced to the attack and duly dispatched Rhodes and Shaw.
Only Gibson looked capable of an extended innings – but a careless run-out saw him back in the pavilion for 34. With nine players failing to reach double figures and only 97 on the board it was going to be a long, quiet journey back from East Yorkshire. If only the Aamer Sajjid chance had stuck…
The season is yet young, and the Academy must now concentrate on the League.
