ACAD: Leaning 63 as Colts win on batting depth

Jack Leaning: Held Yorkshire's batting together with top-score 63

A captain’s innings of 63 from Jack Leaning, above, helped to set up Yorkshire Academy for six points in their Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League match with Sheffield United, who take one point.

The Academy totalled 259-5 in their 55 overs and Sheffield United 206-5, giving the Academy an incomplete win at Weetwood by 53 runs. Leaning returned to captain the side after making his first-team debut: he duly won the toss, and decided to bat on a green wicket under cloudy skies.

Jonathan Tattersall and Eliot Callis made a fine start, notching the 50 in 15 overs, but by a fine diving catch at point by Mark Cummings off brother Paul sent Tattersall back to the pavilion for 28. Twelve runs later a misfield and hesitancy between the batsmen was settled by Hettiarachchi’s direct throw, which ran out Callis for 34.

George Ross and Leaning settled into a fine partnership, which realised 78 - before yet another run-out: a straight drive by Leaning clipped bowler Mark Cummings’s hand and Ross was despatched for an excellent 38 in 57 balls. Leaning held the batting together, and the aggressive Eddie Wilson struck 60 in 43 balls - many of his runs coming from the reverse-sweep.

Wilson and Leaning added 72 before the skipper became the first of Saqib Hussain’s victims when he was bowled with the total on 216 and 50 overs gone. Three overs later Wilson was Hussain’s second scalp, but Ryan Gibson and Will Rhodes put on 20 before the closure.

Brothers Paul and Mark Cummings had both bowled – and now they opened the batting together: they blunted the Academy’s attack and advanced all the way to 128, when Paul was stumped by Wilson off Karl Carver’s left-arm spin for 47.

Ben Percival, 10, became Carver’s second victim when he was caught at mid-on by Ben Coad. When No. 4 James Martin was caught at cover by Gibson off Coad the visitors needed 97 for victory off 10 overs. One run later Mark Cummings was caught by the diving Tattersall at point - another victim for Coad.

Hettiarachchi added 16 quick runs, but he fell to a fine diving catch at mid-off by Gibson off Lewis Stabler, and Sheffield were 206-6 when the overs ran out. Coad had an excellent return of 2-29 in 14 overs, while Carver’s spin yielded 2-54 in 14 overs.

It was the Academy’s depth in batting which prevailed and took them to fifth place in the League.
