ACAD: Oliver's boys take South Africa to the wire

Oliver Hannon-Dalby: Too many of his batsmen gifted their wickets

Oliver Hannon-Dalby, above, captained Yorkshire Academy when they took it to the last over before going down by one wicket to South Africa Centurians Under-19s at Weetwood.

Yorkshire managed 204-8 in their 50 overs, and it took until the second ball of the Centurians’ last over for Bernhard Beukman to smack Lewis Stabler to long-off for the winning four.

The weather held, and Hannon-Dalby lost the toss. The Centurians preferred to field, and on a bowler-friendly wicket the Academy did themselves no favours when hesitant running after the second ball saw Eliot Callis back in the pavilion.

Jonathan Tattersall and Mosun Hussain staged an excellent recovery with a stand of 85, but in the 26th over off-spinner Werner Erasmus had Tattersall caught and bowled. Three balls later George Ross misjudged the pace of the wicket and was caught at mid-off, and four overs later Hussain on 49 gave an easy stumping chance to Johann Smit. He should have reached 50, but he left himself stranded two yards from home.

James McNichol played a sound innings of 29, and he read the pace of the pitch well. With Hannon-Dalby he put on 24 before Armand Wolmarans, a more-than-useful left-arm spinner, had the captain caught. Barney Gibson  and McNichol added 16, but yet again a batsman failed to judge the pace of the pitch and wicket-keeper Gibson was himself stumped off leg-spinner Schalk van Heerden.

There were 10 overs remaining, and too many early batsmen had gifted their wickets. McNichol continued to play well, but five overs later he was caught and bowled by the returning Kyle Melis. Matthew Fisher played some excellent front-foot shots, cruising at a run a ball to an excellent 33. He and Stabler added 37 to make it a respectable total, and the spectators were left wondering whether the batting order was slightly wrong.

Hannon-Dalby and Stabler opened the Academy’s attack, but while the skipper’s pace troubled the first pair they grafted their way to a stand worth 56. First-change medium-pacer Fisher bowled a full length to York both openers, and Carl Karver produced an excellent spell of 3-27 to leave South Africa on 114 -5 in 30 overs.

Battersea was well down the wicket when Gibson stumped him, and Jonck played a poor stroke to be bowled by Tattersall. No. 5 Beukman stood firm. South Africa still needed 22 when No. 11 Wolmarons came to the crease...14 were required off the last three overs...then three off Stabler’s last over.

Beukman settled it second ball. It was a game of contrasts: some good spin bowling, but injudicious shots played by established batsmen.  Victory came to the team which batted well down the order, and it was a fine innings by Centurians’ vice-captain Beukman.
