ACAD: Rain robs gallant Colts of victory chance

It was a memorable day for Yorkshire Academy opening bowler Josh Shaw when he received the Sally Marshall Emerging Player of the Year Award for 2011 from Jennifer Ellison, above, on behalf of Yorkshire County Cricket Supporters’ Association at Headingley Carnegie. Josh also received a cheque for £100.
Josh then struck the first blow for the Academy in their Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League clash with Barnsley – but a thrilling game was to end in a disappointing draw with four overs lost and the hosts so near and yet so far.
The Academy lost the toss and took the field – but they enjoyed an early success when Shaw bowled Jonathan Trower with the score on eight. Simon Widdup and Steven Nuttall then shared a fine partnership of 113 before Widdup, 73, fell to Eliot Callis at mid-wicket off Ryan Gibson – who made it a double when he also trapped Nuttall, 45, in front.
Then it was Gibson again – this time with a fine diving catch at mid-wicket to despatch Matthew Wilson off left-arm spinner Karl Carver. Two breaks for rain meant that having reached 215-8 in their allotted 55 overs by the tea interval Barnsley would have to bowl only 51. Jonathan Tattersall was the Academy’s chief wicket-taker with 3-47, but wicketless Ben Coad conceded only 16 runs in his six overs.
Callis and Tattersall took the Academy to 30 before Callis, 17, was lbw to former Academy coach and off-spinner Richard Wilkinson. The hosts advanced to 83, but Nathan Firn took the first of four excellent catches in the deep when he dived to hold on to Tattersall at mid-wicket off overseas opening bowler Ryan Hercules.
Skipper Jack Leaning and George Ross put on 38, and with 14 overs left and a 7.30 pm finish 94 were still needed. Eddie Wilson, 17, and Will Rhodes scored at a run a ball to back Leaning, but at last Wilkinson trapped the captain for 65. As at Driffield in a previous match the target was 40 runs in the last four overs.
Matthew Fisher with 15 in nine balls and Shaw with nine in 11 balls batted valiantly – but after the allotted 20 overs in the last hour the Academy finished six short of Barnsley’s total. How they needed those lost four overs!
An incomplete match, both sides gaining three points, and Barnsley owed much to the fine off-spin of skipper Wilkinson with 5-69 in 14 overs.
