ACAD: Record goes in a poor day at the office

Jack Leaning, above, steaded the ship, but a poor day at the office saw Yorkshire Academy lose by 46 runs at Harrogate in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League.
Play started over two hours late after run-ups and the surrounding wickets had dried sufficiently, and Academy skipper Azeem Rafiq asked the home side to bat in what was now a 37-over match. With 54 on the board a good throw from Ryan Gibson sent Australian opener David Orange back to the pavilion for 22.
The next breakthrough was not to come until 116 runs later when Rafiq’s quicker ball bowled one-time Yorkshire first-teamer Vic Craven for 72, scored at over a run a ball with eight fours and a six. Ten runs later Will Rhodes bowled opener Alex Twigg for 78 – also with eight fours and a six – but 180 had been scored in 34 of the 37 overs.
Catches were dropped in the cold conditions, and the Academy failed to contain the aggressive batting of the experienced Twigg and Craven. Tea was taken with the visitors facing a target of 200.
Only 23 had been gathered when Rafiq was caught by Joe Ellis-Grewel for eight. Jonathan Tattersall and Leaning added 44, but a ball from Sam Davies kept low to trap Tattersall in front for 47. Leaning provided the steadying influence, but his partnership of 43 with George Ross, 22, ended when Ross was caught in the deep by Orange. Two balls later Gibson was caught.
The scoring rate decreased and, unlike the Harrogate innings, there was no increase in tempo. Orange took another catch to dismiss wicket-keeper Eddie Wilson. Five overs left and 76 required for victory. Leaning, 51, became the third Ollie Driver victim when he was caught by former Academy player Alex Lilley, and Driver dispatched Josh Shaw.
Play ended with Harrogate pocketing six points for an incomplete win and the Academy nothing. Thus, the Academy’s unbeaten League record this season was broken. We look forward to a much better display in Sunday’s League Cup clash with Hull YPI at Weetwood.
