ACAD: Rhodes 70 not out - but cricket is the loser

An excellent 70 not out from Will Rhodes, above, might have made the difference between victory and defeat for Yorkshire Academy in their Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League match with Sheffield United – but in the end rain was the only winner, and cricket the loser.
A damp pitch was evident when the teams arrived at Bawtry Road, but groundsman Andy Tipple managed to get play started on time. The first setback for the Academy boys was losing the toss and being asked to bat on a bowler-friendly wicket. Only six runs came in the first four overs, and when Jack Leaning was caught and bowled in the fifth the first of a number of rain breaks began.
Jonathan Tattersall progressed to 14, but he was caught behind by Joe Tetley off skipper Paul Cummings. Only 25 runs were scored in the first 16 overs, Saqib Hussain and Cummings bowling a very good line. Eddie Wilson was caught in the gully off Zafran Ali, who replaced Squib Hussain, but George Ross was batting well in difficult conditions with 19 under his belt when he was involved in a careless run-out.
47-4 in 23 overs. Not a match-winning score.
Yet again the Academy received a boost from Ryan Gibson, whose 26 included a four and the only six of the afternoon. Ryan and Will Rhodes enjoyed a fine partnership of 42 - broken only when Gibson fell to a brilliant catch at deep-mid-wicket by the diving Zafran Ali.
Rhodes batted on as Mosun Hussain was bowled by left-arm spinner Mark Cummings, who also accepted a return catch from James McNichol. Josh Shaw arrived to support Rhodes – the wicket Sheffield United could not get, and without whom the Academy would have come under serious threat.
Yet another stoppage, and tea was taken. The showers were light at first. The covers were removed…and then returned…and after heavier outbursts play was abandoned at 5.55pm. Four Academy overs remained to be bowled. 145-7, and both teams gained three points only.
