ACAD: Ross 108 as youngsters shatter Cup rivals

A brilliant century by George Ross, above, led the way as Yorkshire Academy smashed their way through Round 1 of the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League Cup competition against Hull YPI at Weetwood.
George – who struck eight fours and three sixes in his 108 – shared in a stand of 191 for the third wicket with the in-form Jack Leaning, who finished on 93 and went on to snatch one of the best slip catches I have seen. Leyshon chipped in with 4-14 as the Academy rattled Hull out for 101 and won by the monumental margin of 272 runs.
Academy won the toss on a slightly drier day, and Leaning’s decision to bat was wise. Jonathan Tattersall and Will Rhodes were in domineering mood and put on 125 for the first wicket before Tattersall, 67, was caught at mid-wicket by skipper Chris Grey. His timing was excellent, and he scored at over a run a ball.
Four runs later Rhodes, 38, was caught in the gully to end an excellent innings. At one stage the pair had a scoring rate of 8.5 per over as the Hull bowlers were put to the sword. More was to come as Leaning – 93 with five fours - and Ross rampaged on to 320 in a stand of high quality, Ross's 100 coming in 79 balls.
Hull captain Grey’s figures of 2-46 were worth noting, but the rest of the attack will long remember their visit to Weetwood without favour. The Academy amassed 373-5 in their 50 overs, surely a Cup record and aided by 27 wides.
Tim Appleyard, 26, and Grey, 27, opened with a partnership of 46 for Hull, but Rhodes trapped Appleyard in front, and with 19 added Rhodes sent back Barrick and Tom Appleyard. Only Ben Kirby, 21 not out, reached double figures as Hull capitulated. One of the best slip catches I have seen - a low grab with an outstretched right hand by Leaning - was superb.
None of the last six Hull batsmen totalled two runs, and they were all for 101. Yorkshire Academy are away to Driffield in Round 2. What a difference a day makes.
