ACAD: Wilson cracks 85 in day of T20 triumph

A blistering 85 from skipper Eddie Wilson, above, was the highlight of a Twenty20 day in which Yorkshire Academy beat Scarborough, York and the rain - thanks to a bowl-out.
The Colts were struggling against Scarborough in the first match of the day at Clifton Park, York, when they were 9-2 in the second over, but a partnership of 62 in nine overs by Mosun Hussain, 31, and Eddie - grandson of 1966 England World Cup fullback Ray Wilson - swung things the Academy's way.
Wilson played one of the best knocks I have seen from him. His powerful hitting brought him eight fours and three sixes in 49 balls - and ended only when he was caught with one ball remaining and the Academy's total had climbed to a formidable 185-8. Wilson had valuable assistance from George Ross with 24 in 15 balls and Will Rhodes, 20 in 11 balls.
It was going to be a challenge for their East Coast rivals, but Danny Evans and Andrew Simpson started well enough with 30 in 3.3 overs. The introduction of Karl Carver sent back three middle-order batsmen who did not reach double figures, and Scarborough fell behind the rate, finally managing only half the job. The skipper had played a formidable part.
York, who comprehensively beat Harrogate in their semi-final, were Yorkshire's next opponents:
With storm clouds threatening, Josh Shaw removed Oliver Hairs and Duncan Snell, York's most forceful batsmen. Wicket-keeper Wilson claimed two stumpings and a catch, while in the outfield Ryan Gibson took two splendid catches. Ryan McKendry batted well for his 58 not out, but the rain descended after 18.1 overs and the York innings was halted.
The wicket area became too wet for a bowl-out, so the teams retired to the nets. It was here that the Academy ended on a high with a 2-0 victory as Gibson and Carver bowled the straight deliveries.
The Academy now meet Driffield, Barnsley and Rotherham at Marine Road, Scarborough, on July 15 for the League finals.
