ACADEMY: Randhawa takes 6 but batting crumbles
News categories
Left-arm spinner Gurman Randhawa was the star of a disappointing opening to their Solly Adams ECB Yorkshire Premier League season.
Skipper Alex Lees lost the toss, and Cleethorpes chose to bat - but the Chichester Road wicket proved very useful to the Academy spinners.
Jack Hargreaves yorked New Zealand Test all-rounder Peter Fulton at eight - just the start needed - but opener Bill Kirby batted soundly: he and Eddie Carlton
added 56 before Carlton was clean bowled by Randhawa, who was gaining considerable turn. Gurman had Alex Osmond caught by Moin Ashraf at square-leg, and Kirby became Randhawa's third victim when David Girling caught him at mid-wicket. Jack Hughes, bowling left-arm spin, was rewarded with turn and bounce and the wickets of Windeatt and Wheeler - but it was Randhawa, with 6-51, who produced spendid return.
Lees and Callum Geldart put on 25 for the Academy before Lees fell to veteran seamer Andy Ellis, and Irfan Amjad and Geldart added 40, at which point Amjad was lbw to leg-spinner Alex Osmond. One run later Geldart decided to test Fulton's fielding - and was run out by two yards. Hargreaves and Hughes had a useful stand of 27, but while the first five batsmen made double figures not one of the last six did so.
Alex Osmond bowled well, but the weak batting of the Academy was exposed, only Hargreaves coming out of it with any credit. With a little more application this was a score which was not beyond reach, but in all it was a poor start to the 2010 season by the young Academy team. Randhawa's bowling was good, but there is much more work to be done.
