ACADEMY: Ross and Rhodes 50s seal second win

Cracking 51: George Ross, who hit three straight sixes

Another excellent win for Yorkshire Academy – and a fine, undefeated 51 for George Ross, above, and Will Rhodes – as the Colts made the most of their pre-season “friendly” against Durham Academy at New Rover.

Durham captain Ryan Buckley won the toss, and Yorkshire’s Alex Lees led his side to field. Durham's progress was slow on the damp outfield, and their openers fell to  Rhodes and Alex Lilley. The third wicket fell on 123, a modest score with only seven overs remaining, but Cole Pearce was unbeaten on 65 when the innings closed on 181-4.

Yet again Ben Coad was very economical, conceding 10 runs in his seven-over spell, while Rhodes returned the fine figures of 17-2 in his six overs. Lees and Callum Geldart scored at a quicker rate than the Durham openers, Geldart, 21, falling in the 12th over to the impressive Paul Coughlin with the total on 60. Ross made a slow start, but he ran to 51 in 73 balls including three superb straight sixes of spinner Buckley before retiring at 138.

Durham failed to trouble the Yorkshire middle-order, and David Girling, 28 not out, and Rhodes overtook the target with 12 overs to spare. Yorkshire batted on, and left-hander Rhodes completed an impressive 50 with eight fours.

Coach Richard Damms and manager Ian Dews must have been very pleased with the confidence shown by the Yorkshire team.
