Academy paceman Shaw leads victory charge
News categories
A late killer burst from paceman Josh Shaw, above, took him to an excellent 5-17 and gave Yorkshire Academy an unexpected 10-run victory over Barnard Castle in their first outing of 2012.
The skies had cleared after a damp journey north for Ben Coad's Academy side. Former Academy player James Finch won the toss for the hosts, asked the visiting "friends" to bat, and they lost Jonathan Tattersall caught at slip by Simon Tennant and George Ross to Sutton at mid-on for seven runs after six overs.
A seven-minute stoppage for hail followed, and then opener Eliott Callis and debutant Mosun Hussain had an excellent partnership of 84. Callis had reached 37 when he was caught at cover by Finch off left-arm spinner James Quinn - a fine, patient innings which held his side together. Callis received excellent supported from Hussain, who went on to 50 in 84 balls before he was snared by wicket-keeper Merryweather.
Both Eddie Wilson and Ryan Gibson holed out without reaching double figures. James McNichol raced to 31 before he was run out after an excellent partnership with Shaw, which enabled the Academy to total 174-7 in their 50 overs.
Skipper Coad and Shaw had early success, and Barnard Castle were reeling on 11-2. Coad conceded only six runs in his first five overs and Shaw 10. Matthew Fisher claimed two victims in his first four overs, and it was 70-5 after 24.
Opener Ben Usher remained firm, and he and Borrowdale put on 83. The cold weather made it difficult for the spinners, and the score mounted to 153-5 with 13 overs remaining. The home side were in control.
There was a dramatic change with the return of Shaw: he bagged four wickets in his second spell, two in the 42 over, and Barnard Castle were 163-8. Wicket-keeper Wilson caught Dixon and Coad took Prosser off Shaw – who finished with 5-17 in 12 overs.
Usher pressed on: he was on 92 when Fisher clean bowled him to leave the Academy winners by 10 runs. It was a fine victory, which in the later stages of the Barnard Castle innings had not seemed possible.
