Alex Lilley: Magnificent 7-15 puts Yorkshire in sight of some silver

Alex Lilley, pictured, toppled top-of-the-table York with a magnificent seven-wicket haul to take Yorkshire Academy through their long-awaited Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League Cup semi-final at Weetwood today.

Winning the toss proved to be one of York's few successes. Opting to bat on a bowler friendly wicket, they suffered quick blows as skipper John Blain and fellow opening bowler James Wainman despatched Liam McKendry - caught behind by Henry Chadwick - and Oliver Hairs, caught by Alex Lees.

Lilley replaced Wainman…and this proved to be York's downfall: they collapsed from 16-2 to 138 all out, thanks to a superb Lilley, who took seven of the last eight wickets to fall. Only Ryan McKendry, 32, and Richard Love, 22, batted with any confidence.

Lilley was assisted by some excellent fielding, and his 7-15 was the best bowling performance of the Academy’s season. League leaders York's batting was weak – indeed, it was a carbon copy of the earlier League match when the Academy trounced them.

Lees and Jonathan Tattersall put on 27 for the Academy before Tattersall was a Ryan McKendry victim, caught behind by deputy wicket-keeper Ben Earl. Lees and Jack Leaning then batted extremely well, Lees initially forcing the pace, but Leaning gaining in confidence as they plundered the weak attack.

Leaning gave one chance, but he finished on 53 not out in 72 minutes off 74 balls, with seven fours and one six. Lees was undefeated for the second day running, coming in with 60 not out in 99 balls and 106 minutes as the Academy ran home by nine wickets.

York's cause was not helped by the 23 wides they bowled. It was the Academy's day – with a final against Scarborough on a date to be fixed.
