Afridi urges supporters to get behind Pakistan

In an interview for the ECB Match Programme prior to their MCC Spirit of Cricket Home Series against Australia, Pakistan Captain Shahid Afridi has asked for the local Pakistan support in England to make his side feel like they really are playing at home.

How do you see your role?

As a leader, a senior player helping to pull the team together. I think when you do the job sincerely, results take care of themselves. My role, together with our other senior figures, is to help guide the new players.

I know my job, the coach knows his and the players know theirs. We’ll put up a combined effort to lift the team. It is absolutely vital for Pakistan cricket that we do that.

Do the team have a point to prove here, in front of some fervent support?

There is no substitute for playing games at home, but that’s not possible at the moment, so we have to rely on the support of our people living in England. I hope they come and support us like they did in the ICC World Twenty20 last year. That was overwhelming.

Does it feel strange to have a ‘home’ series away from home?

We’re becoming more used to it. In a way it will be strange, but if Pakistani people come in big numbers, it won’t be so strange.

Do you enjoy playing here (in England) ?

I’ve always liked England. The conditions here are very challenging and test your qualities. The crowd’s support is always decent; they know the game and how to appreciate a good shot, a good ball and good fielding. It’s a lovely place to play.

Pakistan can still produce magical performances from nowhere. How do you explain this unpredictability ?

Once you start winning, your confidence increases and you tend to repeat good performances.

Since making these comments Pakistan have won both of the t20 international matches against Australia and with tickets for the 2nd MCC Spirit of Cricket Test Match at Headingley Carnegie starting from just £30 for adults and £15 for children now is a great time to obtain your tickets and see if they can continue on this winning run.
