All-rounder McGrath sees Academy into semis
Anthony McGrath, pictured, weighed in with 90 and two wickets as Yorkshire Academy thrashed Hull by 160 runs to go through to the semi-final of the Solly Sports Yorkshire County Premier League Cup at Weetwood next Sunday.
Having lost the toss, Alex Lees's team were asked to bat under overcast conditions, but positive batting by openers Lees and Jonathan Tattersall saw an opening stand of 55 - helped by wayward bowling in the first eight overs when 14 wides were recorded.
Tattersall, opening for only the second time this season, played shots early in his innings and was very positive, but he was lbw pushing forward to medium-pacer Daniel Wilkinson.
No. 3 McGrath played a quality innings, hitting seven fours in his first 50, which he reached in 51 balls with the total 147-1. Lees and McGrath were largely untroubled by the Hull attack, the 150 coming up in 25 overs. McGrath rotated the strike well, and he and Lees ran well together.
Like Tattersall before him, Lees was lbw, but it was to leg-spinner Barrick. Jack Leaning partnered McGrath in a 45-run partnership, and then he and George Ross added 52 valuable runs. Ross rattled up 29 in even time, but gave his wicket away with an injudicious shot to be caught at mid-off by Watkin off the medium-paced James Phillips.
Leaning's was the last wicket to fall, having reached his 50 in 59 balls. Alex Lilley returned to the side after an absence to hit a brisk 20 in 15 balls - enough to push the total over the 300 mark. Hull struggled...and at tea the skies were darkening, with rain threatening.
It was James Wainman who threatened after the break: he claimed the scalps of the first five Hull batsmen with a fine spell of left-arm pace bowling. 47-6, and the sky as dark as Hull's prospects of victory. Lilley clean bowled Wilson. 47-7.
As often happens Hull captain Barrick led a recovery: he and Phillips put on 93 runs, but the experience of McGrath - this time with the ball - ensured victory for the Academy. Anthony bowled Barrick, and thanks to a fine catch low at second slip by Lees he despatched Broadley. Ross ran out Chris Lound.
A fine victory means that the Academy meet York at Weetwood in the semi-final of the competition next Sunday, July 17, having beaten York earlier this season. Will the League leaders be favourites? Will the Academy continue to show good batting form? Come to Weetwood on Sunday!
