Top of his game: All-rounder David Wainwright, who was two short of his century when Castleford's overs ran out, and who then took 6-68 to spin the Academy to defeat

All-rounder David Wainwright, above, scored 98 not out and took 6-68 as Castleford beat Yorkshire Academy by 49 runs in the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League.

Castleford won the toss, took strike on a batsman-friendly pitch at Headingley Carnegie, and Chris Young and Andrew Bourke got away to an opening stand of 34. Opening bowlers skipper John Blain and Moin Ashraf restricted the scoring, but troubled neither batsman.

It was when Ashley Robinson replaced Blain that Bourke was caught by wicket-keeper Barney Gibson. This brought in left-hander Wainwright, and the second-wicket partnership put on 101 before Chris Young was bowled by left-hand spinner Gurman Randhawa. As usual Randhawa flighted the ball well - and he had Scott Hopkinson lbw first ball.

Jack Hughes replaced David Girling, who had toiled for his sole success of Shaun le Roux, who shuffled back when he should have been well forward.

Randhawa had further success when Will Hodson played a rather reckless shot and Irfan Amjad took a high catch at deep mid-on. At the other end Wainwright played a superb knock, patient, timing the ball well, and intent on ensuring that Castleford used up all of their 55 overs.

Six middle-order batsmen were out for single figures, but Wainwright batted soundly. Had he fallen Castleford would not have reached 200 – he was 98 not out when the innings closed, hitting 12 fours in a stay of 132 minutes. A quality performance, but had he faced more of the bowling in the last two overs he surely would have completed his century?

Yet again Randhawa with 4-69 in 15 overs had bowled extremely well for the Academy, taking his wicket haul in League matches this year to 45. No quick bowlers took more than one wicket: it was the spinners who were effective.

A good start is always useful in the Yorkshire League, and Alex Lees and Callum Geldart put on 58. Neither were unduly troubled by the opening attack of Alex Romaniw and Young, but after 12 overs Wainwright came on with experienced spinner John Randerson.

Lees must have regretted the reckless shot which cost him his wicket when he tried to force Wainwright at 58, and 25 runs later Wainwright had Geldart caught behind by Jason Pitcher. A partnership of six by Amjad and Jack Hargreaves failed to impress - Hargreaves played a poor shot, and was caught low down at deep mid-off by Romaniw. Amjad showed great patience in reaching his 41, and it was a pity that others did not do the same.

Randerson chipped in with two wickets, trapping both Hughes and Girling lbw. Randhawa tried to force the pace – hitting three fours in his 33-ball innings until he holed out in the deep. It was left to Wainwright to clean up: Gibson was stumped when he was tempted down the wicket to push the score on, and last-man Robinson was lbw.

Castleford fully deserved their win. They were much indebted to opening batsman Young for his 59 - but it was Wainwright who took the honours.

Spectators must have questioned why the Academy, who had fallen well behind the required run rate, did not settle for at least one point. It might well have helped when the final League placing is resolved.
