Andrew Gale to miss the rest of the season
News categories
Yorkshire skipper, Andrew Gale, will miss the rest of the season with a broken right arm.
Gale missed Sunday's CB40 defeat to Derbyshire after being hit on the arm by an Oliver Hannon-Dalby delivery during a net session on Saturday. X-rays on Monday confirmed the break.
The left-hander had scored 769 first-class runs at 40.47 in 2011 and was on the verge of passing the thousand runs in a season landmark for the first time in his career.
Jacques Rudolph will captain the Yorkshire side against Sussex in the crucial LV= County Championship match starting at Scarborough on Wednesday, although he will also miss the subsequent match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston as it coincides with a South Africa training camp.
Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire's Director of Professional Cricket, said: "It's not good, but we've got to get on with it. We've got other people who can come in and hopefully fill the gap. Losing your captain is not ideal. His leadership qualities will be missed, as will his ability with the bat. He's out for the season so it's up to the rest of the players to try and get us the highest placed finish possible. We can't dwell on it - we need to be positive and look forward."
Meanwhile, Gale summed up his own thoughts on twitter with one word: "Gutted". Elsewhere he added: “It is a blow, but on the positive side, the opportunity is now there for Joe Sayers and Adam Lyth to score the runs that I’ve scored. I’ve probably had one of the best seasons I’ve ever had. It’s disappointing from a personal point of view but it’s not about me now. It’s about the team and the challenge we face.”
