Ashraf stars as Development XI lose to Sri Lanka A

Ashraf celebrates a wicket

Moin Ashraf did himself no harm as his 6 overs for the England Development XI saw him take 2-25. Ashraf helped the Development XI restrict Sri Lanka A to 165-9 in their rain reduced 31 overs. The England side lost by 6 runs when they could only make 159-6 in response at Old Trafford.

It was Moin's List A debut and afterwards he said: "It was nice to represent the country. I have wanted to do so for a long time and it finally happened today and it helped I put in a solid performance. Getting this recognition has definitely made me more hungry to perform and do well. I need to perform more on a consistent basis for Yorkshire and hopefully I can then make my way through the England ranks, but at the moment my focus is getting back into the Yorkshire 1st Team."

Moin feels his form dipped a bit this season, but he's back on track: "I didn't feel I was performing up to the standards I set last season. I lost my rhythm at a crucial part of the season and this resulted in a dip in form, but I'm getting that form back now and starting to put in some solid performances. I'd like to get myself back into the 1st Team and play a part in the Championship this season."

MATCH PREVIEW

The ECB have today announced Moin Ashraf in an England Development XI to face Sri Lanka A in a one-day fixture on Monday 8 August at Old Trafford.

Moin Ashraf said: "It's a great honour and it's a great thing to be called up by any England side."

The England Development XI replaces Lancashire for the fixture against Sri Lanka A following Lancashire's qualification for the Friends Life t20 quarter finals. Selectors took county commitments of players into account before selecting the side.

England Development XI: Zafar Ansari (Surrey), Moin Ashraf (Yorkshire), Josh Cobb (Leicestershire), Chris Dent (Gloucestershire), Matthew Dunn (Surrey), Ateeq Javid (Warwickshire), Tom Maynard (Surrey), Tymal Mills (Essex), David Payne (Gloucestershire), Jason Roy (Surrey), John Simpson (Middlesex).

David Graveney, National Performance Manager, said: "We have selected some very promising young cricketers for the England Development XI who have impressed in first class cricket this season. The majority of players have been involved in the England U19 programme in recent years and this fixture is not only an acknowledgement of their progress since the U19s, it also provides an important opportunity for these players to impress selectors and the Performance Director David Parsons and the EPP coaching staff ahead of selection for the England Performance Programme this winter."
