AWARDS: Root takes NatWest PCA Young Player title
News categories
The PCA, in association with NatWest and the ECB, yesterday hosted the NatWest PCA Awards at Battersea Evolution. In front of players, former players, officials and guests, Nick Compton was crowned NatWest PCA Player of the Year for 2012, while Joe Root was named as NatWest PCA Young Player of the Year.
Yorkshire’s opening batsman Root continued the impressive start to his career by scoring more than 1,400 runs in all domestic cricket in only his second full season as a professional.

A career-best 222 not out against Hampshire was the highlight of his summer as he helped the Tykes to promotion in the LV= County Championship. The elegant right-hander will join Compton in the England Test squad to tour India.
Grandson of England legend Denis, Nick Compton enjoyed a magnificent season with the bat for Somerset, scoring 1,494 first-class runs at an average just shy of 100, and was denied the opportunity to become the first player in 25 years to score 1,000 first-class runs by the end of May by rain. The 29-year-old finished with five hundreds and seven half-centuries and was subsequently selected as part of England’s Test squad to tour India this winter.
