Student teacher: former Yorkshire Academy batsman Gary Ballance, whose polished 101 was too much for his former teammates

Former Yorkshire Academy opener Gary Ballance, above, cruised to 101 as Barnsley beat his old teammates by 79 runs in the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League.

Second-placed Barnsley drew first blood in their clash with third-placed Academy - winning the toss in the last-but-one game of season - but they suffered a quick blow when opener Simon Widdup - who has compiled over 1,000 runs this season - was caught low down at second slip by Alex Lees off Academy skipper John Blain.

Ballance joined Matt Wilson, and the pair put on 142 runs in 37 overs. Thus was set the basis for a very good score. Wilson was the first to go - stumped by Henry Chadwick off George Ross - but Ballance continued to accumulate runs: he reached his century only to be stumped one run later off the left-arm spin of Jack Hughes.

Azeem Rafique survived a stumping miss early in his innings, but with 40 runs in 33 balls he pushed the score along with valuable help from Glen Yates. Off-spinner Ross, who in an excellent 16-over spell took 4-65, was the only Academy bowler really to trouble the Barnsley batsmen, and their innings closed on an excellent 252-6.

The Academy batsmen needed a good start - but did not get one. Alex Lees was caught by Rafique off the bowling of Henry Londt, and Callum Geldart and Ross both fell at 69. The scoring rate was slow, and the fine off-spin of Richard Wilkinson proved difficult for the Academy middle-order. Jack Hughes was caught at slip by Yates off Rafique.

At the Holgate end Wilkinson had the fine figures of 7-63, only Blain with 36 in 30 balls showing any confidence with the bat. Ross had to retire on 38 with a back injury, but was the final wicket to fall when he returned at No.11.

It was with the last-nbut-one ball that Barnsley deservedly clinched an outright win and eight points.
