Barbados: Lancashire lift War of the Roses Trophy

Anthony McGrath strikes out on his way to a fine fifty

Yorkshire 226-9; Lancashire 266-7 (both in 94 overs)

Yorkshire may not have lifted the War of the Roses trophy, but they returned an encouraging bowling display against Lancashire at the 3 Ws Oval as their tour of Barbados drew to a close. Lancashire captain Glen Chapple picked up the pot after half-centuries from Stephen Moore and Mark Chilton had guided their side to 266-7 from 94 overs in reply to Yorkshire’s first day 226-9.

Rafiq recorded the pick of Yorkshire’s figures with 3-88 from 22 overs, while claimed 2-72 from 24 and trialist Best 1-12 from 14. Bajan Best was arguably the pick of their bowling as he looks to earn a contract at Headingley.

Moore, who retired not out at lunch with 54 off 87 balls, shared an opening partnership of 92 inside 25 overs with Tom Smith (38) before the latter was caught at point advancing to Rafiq.

Smith went just before the lunch break, and Paul Horton went soon after it, caught by Joe Sayers off the bowling of Rafiq, to leave the score at 110-2 in the 30th.

Steven Croft was trapped lbw to a Best ball that kept low before Rafiq grabbed his third when Chilton fell in an identical manner to Smith’s earlier dismissal. The tall right-hander recorded 59 off 93 balls.

Gareth Cross walloped a six and two fours over long-on and mid-wicket in three balls off Rafiq on the way to a breezy 22, but the keeper was caught behind by Jonny Bairstow to help Rashid get his name in the wickets column.

It was the first of three wickets to fall for 20 runs in eleven overs, with Lancashire falling to 244-7 in the 81st having also lost Sutton lbw to Rashid and Sajid Mahmood lbw to Hannon-Dalby.

Yorkshire’s director of professional cricket Martyn Moxon and captain Andrew Gale were due to sit down last night to make a decision on whether they would be offering Best an overseas deal to cover Ryan Harris.

Yorkshire end their pre-season tour of Barbados over the next couple of days with a battle against the old enemy at the 3 Ws Oval. Yorkshire were 226-9 off 94 overs in their first innings at the close of play after winning the toss against Lancashire.

DAY ONE REPORT

But spin duo Azeem Rafiq and Adil Rashid claimed five wickets between them and pace men Tino Best and Oliver Hannon-Dalby (1-19 from 13) the other two.
