Barbados: Yorkshire lose to UWI
News categories
University of West Indies made 121 for 5 in their 20 overs and then dismissed Yorkshire for a mere 63 to take the game by a 58 run margin.
When Yorkshire had restricted the UWI to 121 most spectators were booking themsleves in for a Yorkshire appearance in Finals Day, but now the White Rose county will travel to the 3 Ws Oval to contest the Plate match against Derbyshire to decide who takes 5th place. In the other matches today Essex beat Derbyshire and Lancashire narrowly got home against Barbados in the best match of the day.
Yorkshire named a strong side for the match and approached the early overs with the ball well after Andrew Gale won the toss and elected to field.
Oliver Hannon-Dalby's first over included four wides in his first five balls and he was promptly removed from the attack with Gale rotating his bowlers at regular intervals. Steve Patterson and Ben Sanderson pulled things back with good spells, but Rolan Reifer with 58 not out changed the complexion of the game in his 46 ball stay at the crease which included 4 huge sixes.
Yorkshire's reply got off to the worst possible start when Andrew Gale was caught behind off the bowling of Moore to the first ball of the innings. Adam Lyth pulled Khrismar Catlin straight down square legs throat to make the score 8-2 and Yorkshire were rocking.
Catlin, whose final figures were 4-11 from four overs was the pick of all of the seamers on show. He extracted pace and bounce from the Kensington Oval track and later added McGrath, Sayers and Rashid to his haul.
Richard Pyrah and Ben Sanderson threatened a later revival, but struggled to find the fence and found the mounting run-rate too much of a task.
It has been a disappointing day for Andrew Gale's young side where poor decision making and shot selection cost them dear. This young side will make mistakes but is what they learn from days like these that will define the season and Yorkshire cricket's next few summers.
