Barbados: Yorkshire v Derbyshire drawn

Gale and Rafiq celebrate a wicket

Yorkshire made 301-6 after dismissing Derbyshire for 185 in what was a solid performance to get their Caribbean crusade up and running. A moral victory for Andrew Gale on his first outing as skipper.

Yorkshire finished the match at 301-6 after Gary Ballance was dismissed in the final over of the 2-day tour opener against Derbyshire. Adam Lyth and Joe Sayers had added 57 for the first wicket and then Anthony McGrath, Andrew Gale and Adil Rashid continued the good work as Yorkshire put in a very creditable first performance of 2010.

Anthony McGrath (72), raised his bat for a fine half century mid-way through the afternoon, and alongside Andrew Gale (39) added 109 for the 3rd wicket. McGrath's innings lasted 178 balls and included 6 fours and 1 six.

The old and new skippers prospered until Andrew Gale was adjudged lbw, although there was every indication that the captain had got a healthy nick before the ball hit his pad.

Jonathan Bairstow looked in fine fettle before tea, but was out shortly after the break for 10 - lbw to Dan Redfern. Gary Ballance and Adil Rashid then progressed with a fair degree of comfort and no little attacking intent. Adil Rashid deposited four sixes over the fence, including one into the middle of the small bunch of travelling Yorkshire supporters. Ballance lost his wicket for 38 in the last over of the day and Rashid ended the match unbeaten on a fine 67.

Earlier, Adam Lyth was caught by Needham at second slip off the bowling of Ian Hunter for 26 in the 23rd over of the day. He played a solid knock and was particularly punishing through the off-side.

Joe Sayers (32) continued to push the score along but was brilliantly caught one-handed at fine leg by Mark Foottit after top edging a hook shot from the bowling of Tom Lungley.

All of the Yorkshire batsmen gained valuable time in the middle ahead of the weekend's twenty20 competition.

DAY ONE REPORT

Azeem Rafiq claimed 5-21 in an impressive 20-over spell and Oliver Hannon-Dalby 3-27 to bowl out Derbyshire for 185 on Day 1 at the 3 Ws Oval. Yorkshire's openers, Joe Sayers and Adam Lyth, added 25 in reply before the close of play.

Steve Patterson and Hannon-Dalby set the tone for an excellent first day of the tour by strangling the top order. Hannon-Dalby returned after lunch to dimiss Greg Smith and Chesney Hughes in the 33rd over of the day to reduce Derbyshire to 75-4 and then Azeem Rafiq got in on the wicket-taking act.

Oliver had earlier trapped Paul Borrington lbw to reduce Derbyshire to 5-1. Smith was caught low down at cover by Azeem Rafiq and Hughes was trapped plum in front.

Adil Rashid had struck in his second over to remove Garry Park for 22 with the score on 55, but it was his spin partner in this game who has impressed.

Rafiq bowled with aggression and accuracy to trouble all of the Derbyshire batsmen.  He struck first to have Lee Goddard caught at mid-wicket for 19 and then in the 54th over he trapped Dan Redfern caught behind for an impressive 32 (126-6). Eight overs later he had Needham caught at short-leg by Adam Lyth to make the score 140-7. In one over he removed Borrington lbw and Groenewald was stumped by Bairstow to leave Derbyshire 157-8 and notch Rafiq's 5-for. The off-spinner turned the ball quite considerably and very few deliveries went by without a grunt, groan or appeal as the batsmen struggle to cope with his turn.

Steve Patterson got his just deserts for a tireless probing effort by claiming the final Derbyshire wicket.

Derbyshire captain, Wayne Madsen, retired hurt early in his innings with a sore groin.

Andrew Gale lost his first toss as Yorkshire captain and led his side into the field for Day 1 of the 2-day pre-season friendly at the 3 Ws ground in Barbdos. He kept a tight rein on his bowling attack, rotating them at regular intervals in extremely hot weather.

Meanwhile, Joe Root, Richard Pyrah and Ben Sanderson who are not in the Yorkshire side today are pert of a Combined County XI who are taking on the University of West Indies elsewhere.

The other members of the squad not playing are Jack Hargreaves, on his first senior tour, and Gerard Brophy and David Wainwright who are recovering from injury - Wainwright is a few days ahead of Brophy in terms of recovery, but both are hopeful of playing their part before the tour is over.
