Bears beat Yorkshire to secure final spot
News categories
Yorkshire’s young tourists ran out of steam against Warwickshire after a rain delay that made Barbados resemble Scarborough. The experienced pair of Rikki Clarke and Jim Troughton added 70 for the 4th wicket to see the Bears home in a contest that was nip and tuck for 75% of play.
Joe Root once more showed his immense promise with 30 from 32 balls, and Gary Ballance made 41 from 40, but was caught at deep extra cover knocking the leather off a ball from Holmes when a foot either side of the fielder would have found the boundary.
It it was Lee Hodgson who sparkled with 35 runs from 21 balls to take the Tykes to 134-4 from their 20 overs. He looked well organised and his bat made the noise that a bat does when held by a player with decent timing.
And then the heavens opened. In a scene that was not in the tour brochure the ground was drenched in heavy rain for three hours. One thing about the Caribbean though is that when it stops the sun comes out and the puddles soon disappear.
The organisers scrapped the Plate Final that was scheduled to be played at 4pm and allowed the match to remain a full Twenty20 encounter.
David Wainwright bowled beautifully for his 2-17 from 4 overs and James Lee looked like an Australian winter had done him now harm at all.
When Clarke joined Troughton the game disappeared from Yorkshire’s grasp. Showing their experience to manoeuvre Gurman Randhawa and Moin Ashraf to the fence the pair seemed destined to be there at the end.
Lee Hodgson had Clarke caught at long-on for 42 from 24 balls, but new Bears skipper, Troughton, joined by Tim Ambrose saw them across the line with more than an over to spare to secure a place in the final of the Barbados Twenty20 Cup to play Derbyshire.
No disgrace to the Yorkshire lads and there is plenty to look forward to with this talented young crop.
And congratulations to Warwickshire who later beat Derbyshire in the Final of the competition.
