Brophy leads way in university draw

Yorkshire and Leeds Bradford UCCE saw out a rain interrupted 2-day draw at Headingley Carnegie and it was Gerard Brophy who stole the show on Day 1 with a well crafted 130. Steve Patterson continued his good pre-season form with 3 wickets on Day 2 and the signs are promising for Richard Pyrah's troublesome shoulder as he also grabbed 3 student scalps.

Ryan Sidebottom, at his miserly best, slipped calmly back into the bowling ranks on his homecoming bow.

After winning the toss in this pre-season friendly, skipper Richard Pyrah opted to bat first. Yorkshire had slipped to 148-6 but then a 7^th wicket stand of 137 between Gerard Brophy, the Club's 2011 Beneficiary, and Azeem Rafiq steadied the ship. Brophy helped himself to 130 with 21 fours from 162 deliveries and Rafiq made 42 from 116 balls.

Both were dismissed within 5 minutes but then Ryan Sidebottom (24*) and Steve Patterson (22*) ensured the Yorkshire score progressed due to a combination of good shots interspersed with some solid edges along the way. How many times will their tail-end contrubutions be vital in 2011?

Yorkshire finished on 336-8 from 94.1 overs when rain and bad light closed in and Richard Pyrah declared on that overnight total.

The Leeds-Bradford reply began promisingly enough with 31 posted before Ben Slater was bowled by a Steve Patterson.

Dan Hodgson, fresh from a marathon 76 a week earlier, came in at number 3 and began well enough.until Patterson had him caught by Gary Ballance at third slip. Rick Moore followed two balls later and the wheels were well and truly off at 55-3.

Richard Pyrah joined the attack and chipped in with two more victims and Leeds-Bradford were glad to go to lunch at 77-5.

Play was held up for half an hour immediately after lunch by light rain and, just after the re-start, Joe Leach departed to another slip catch as Ryan Sidebottom came back and got his line consistently correct to the right-handers. The rain returned at 2.15 pm.

Play eventually resumed at 4.15 pm for a final 20 overs, in which Naweed Ghany (44 – 6 fours – 92 balls) and Craig Williamson added 54 for the 7^th wicket to secure a draw. In all, 42 overs were lost to the weather on the 2^nd day.
