Callum Geldart batters Academy to eight points

Callum Geldart, whose 69 in 100 balls saw Yorkshire Academy to eight points

Callum Geldart, above, cruised to 69 not out with three sixes and four fours as Yorkshire Academy thrashed Harrogate by nine wickets in their Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League match at Weetwood.

Harogate opted to take first strike - but quick breakthroughs by skipper John Blain and Jack Hargeaves saw them struggling at 13-2. Hargreaves bowled the experienced John Proud, while a superb catch in the deep by Irfan Amjad accounted for Alexis Twigg.

Former Yorkshire batsman Vic Craven and skipper Ryan Bradshaw steadied the batting - but Craven tried to hit Ben Coad over the top, and Blain held an easy catch at deep mid-off. Left-arm spinner Gurman Randhawa clean bowled Nick Lindley for 11 to make it 89-4, and then caught Bradshaw off Coad. At 95-5 the Harrogate tail needed to wag.

The introduction of Jack Hughes saw more wickets - Harry Chadwick caught Dominic Sharp, and Matt Ingham was held at gully by Alex Lilley. A run-out did not help the cause, James Tattersall falling to a good throw from Lilley. Finally, Randhawa picked up two wickets to leave Harrogate 108 all out and in deep trouble.

Fine control by both spinners gave Randhawa figures of 3-16 and Hughes 2-7.

Alex Lees and Geldart put on 22 for the Academy's first wicket - Lees falling lbw to Craven when he played across the line. This did not deter Irfan Amjad and Geldart - who began patiently but then quickened his scoring rate, hitting three sixes and four fours in his fine 69 not out. Amjad finished on 29 not out, hitting four fours.

A splendid partnership, an excellent eight points. Let us hope that this form continues when the Academy meet Castleford in Round 1 of the League Cup tomorrow.
