A dramatic collapse snatched defeat from the jaws of victory for Yorkshire Carnegie in their Friends Provident Trophy clash with Surrey Brown Caps at Headingley Carnegie today.

Yorkshire lost five wickets for five runs in 28 balls to give Surrey a shock victory by 63 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis system for calculating rain-hit matches. 

Yorkshire, set to chase a modest 185 in what was meant to be a 47-over match after a delayed start, were romping it when Jacques Rudolph was second out at 63 in the 14th over, with pinch-hitter Rana Naved-ul-Hasan (first picture) going like a train on 43.

Michael Vaughan came in, and Rana was denied the strike as the former England captain struggled to find form against the leg-spin of Chris Schofield and the pace of Grant Elliott. Vaughan had faced 31 balls before he swept Schofield for his first four to reach double figures, and he then fenced outside the off-stump to touch Elliott to wicket-keeper Gary Wilson - who had played for Ireland the day before.

Skipper Anthony McGrath was lbw in the next over playing across the line at Schofield, and with Rana facing only a dozen balls in 10 overs Yorkshire were falling away. Schofield had Rana caught at slip for 49 off 56 balls with four fours and a six, and in the next over Elliott despatched Adil Rashid and Simon Guy in successive balls to leave Carnegie reeling at 83-7.

Ajmal Shahzad averted the hat-trick, but rain stopped play at 86-7 in 28.1 overs with Yorkshire way behind the clock. Schofield came off with 9-1-16-3, and Elliott 4.1-1-4-3. Yorkshire returned after 59 minutes to face the Duckworth-Lewis revised target of 168 - 82 more runs in 4.5 overs, but were bowled out for 104 in 30.2 overs, Elliott 4-14 in five overs.

Earlier, Richard Pyrah and Shahzad both bowled excellent opening spells, and each ended with two wickets as Carnegie held Brown Caps to 184-7. McGrath lost the toss for the seventh consecutive time in all fixtures since the start of the season, and Surrey got off to a bright 39 opening stand with Scott Newman and Michael Brown.

Rana bowled Brown with a slower delivery which completely baffled the batsman, and from then on Surrey had their backs to the wall as Pyrah and Shahzad took over the attack. Pyrah had Newman and Usman Afzaal caught behind by the athletic Simon Guy, while Shahzad captured the prize scalp of Mark Ramprakash when he chased a ball outside off-stump and Guy made no mistake.

Pyrah was rested with figures of 7-1-12-2, and Shahzad was equally as impressive with his first stint reading 5-1-8-1.

Elliott was smartly stumped by Guy off Adil Rashid’s leg-break, and Surrey were in deep trouble at 82-5. It took a patient partnership of 67 between Matt Spriegel and Gary Wilson to stop a collapse.

Wilson was unlucky to be run out for 34 when Spriegel’s hard return drive struck him outside the crease and Pyrah pounced on the ball to knock down the stumps. Chris Schofield helped Spriegel to add valuable runs before he was bowled by Shahzad off the last ball of the innings for 22 - leaving Spriegel unbeaten on a career-best one-day score of 56 from 90 balls, with one four.

Yorkshire Carnegie lost to the form side in their FPT group yesterday despite a stunning century from Jacques Rudolph. On Bank Holiday Monday they face the Surrey Brown Caps looking to reinstate themselves with the tag of favourites to qualify for the Quarter-Finals of the competition.

Yorkshire Carnegie keep the same squad for the second game in two days with Tim Bresnan on England duty and Gerard Brophy out with an injured hand.

50 overs a side and it starts at 10.45am!

Don't get caught out by the varying start times in the FPT this summer. The counties were given the choice on whether to start their home fixtures at 10.45am or 12 noon. Yorkshire have gone for 10.45am so get yourself out of bed on time!

The regional groups have gone for this years FPT - Yorkshire Carnegie face Durham Dynamos, Sussex Sharks, Gloucestershire Gladiators and Surrey Brown Caps in 2009.

The top two in each group qualify for the Quarter-Finals, then there are Semi-Finals and then a Lord's Final.
