Carnegie chase Outlaws back into the forest

Over the rope: Adam Lyth swings for six to mid-wicket during his top-score 43 for Yorkshire Carnegie

Adam Lyth, above, top-scored for Yorkshire with 43 - but it was Anthony McGrath who lifted the man-of-the-match award as a businesslike performance earned the hosts a seven-wicket victory over North Group leaders Nottinghamshire Outlaws in the Friends Provident t20 match at Headingley Carnegie this evening.

This was Yorkshire’s third consecutive win in the competition - achieved with 10 balls to spare - and McGrath’s contribution was an unbeaten 38, the important wicket of David Hussey and a couple of catches after Outlaws had called correctly and decided to bat in front of a sun-soaked crowd of 3,853.

Chasing a 159 target, Carnegie got off to the ideal start with 19 off the first over from Darren Pattinson, skipper Andrew Gale hammering the first two balls for boundaries and Lyth following up with a six and a four. Gale was bowled by Dirk Nannes in the next over, but Lyth and Herschelle Gibbs were in excellent form again, the second-wicket pair adding 53 before Gibbs aimed Samit Patel straight to Hussey at cover.

Lyth looked set for a second successive half-century, but after reaching 43 from 33 balls with three fours and a six he hit Graeme White’s first ball towards the mid-wicket boundary, where Alex Hales held on to a low catch.

Wicket-keeper Gerard Brophy announced himself with three boundaries in one over from Paul Franks, and with McGrath in complete control at the other end the fourth wicket added an unbroken 61, McGrath finishing it with a boundary: his runs came off 30 balls with three fours, while Brophy’s 31 used up only 22 deliveries and contained four fours.

Steven Patterson had once again taken a wicket with his first ball to send back Alistair Brown, and when he had Matt Wood caught by Gale the Outlaws were 36-2.

Hales and Samit Patel worried Yorkshire with a 70 stand in eight overs before Patel fell to the economic Pyrah - who went on to take the catch of the day, curling his outstretched right hand round the ball at long-off as he concentrated on keeping inside the rope while he held on to Hales’ drive, the opener departing for a well-struck 62 from 43 balls, with four fours and three sixes.

With Hales gone, Carnegie's bowlers kept it tight, and the Outlaws were unable to free themselves from the stranglehold.

PREVIEW: The games come thick and fast this week and Yorkshire Carnegie are on a roll after back-to-back victories over Leicestershire Foxes and Worcestershire Royals - the latter engineered by an inspired Adam Lyth.

The weather forecast is terrific all week so there is every incentive to come along on Thursday, cheer the Yorkshire Carnegie side on against the form team in the North Division and soak up the sunshine.

Nottinghamshire Outlaws have start well in this summer's competition and sit at the top of the North Division table with only one defeat in their first seven games.
