MATCH REPORT

Yorkshire won by 69 runs over Northamptonshire to record their third success of their CB40 campaign under the Wantage Road floodlights.

Adil Rashid gave further evidence that he is getting back to his best by taking 4-38 in his 8 overs. It was his first four-wicket haul in List A cricket and put the skids under the Steelbacks as they battled to chase down 263 to win the Group C clash.

Rob Newton (30) and Niall O'Brien (38) combined to add 54 for the first wicket in 10.4 overs before Rashid weaved his magic. He had Newton caught by Ballance, Alec Wakely stumped by Gerard Brophy and O'Brien caught brillaintly at short cover by Andrew Gale. Rob Keogh (14) became Rashid's fourth victim when he was lbw to make the score 129-4 midway through the 25th over.

Then two excellent pieces of fielding from David Miller, we're getting used to this, saw David Sales (55) and David Murphy run out and Northants were losing ground rapidly.

Moin Ashraf, with a Usain Bolt finger celebration, dismissed James Middlebrook lbw for 2 and the Steelbacks required an unlikely 77 from 18 balls.

You couldn't keep Miller out of the game. He caught Andrew Hall (28) running in from long-on. That gave Patterson his only wicket from the last ball of the penultimate over. Iain Wardlaw bowled two yorkers to bowl Lee Daggett and Luke Evans as Northants were 193 all out on the final ball.

It was a brave decision by Steelbacks skipper Andrew Hall to ask Yorkshire to take first hit under rare summer sunshine.

SKY's big screen flashed a 'beware of the sun' warning midway through the first innings as the Tykes enjoyed a decent batting track.

The score became 42-1 midway through the eighth over when Andrew Gale slapped a square cut straight to Rob Newton at backward point. Gale's disappointed look said it all as bowler Luke Evans celebrated.

The second wicket added 47 as Adam Lyth continued his good form before being caught behind off James Middlebrook for 29.

Phil Jaques was going great guns and when he was joined by David Miller things looked ominous for the hosts. Yorkshire took their four-over batting powerplay at 177-2 after 30 overs. Miller cracked a straight six as he began to open his shoulders.

Jaques made 87 from 83 balls including 9 fours as he made life hard for his former club. He was caught by Olly Stone off Luke Evans on the deep midwicket boundary. Miller backed away attempting a cut but played Lee Daggett onto his stumps and was on his way for 44. Not just Yorkshire, but it's amazing how many wickets fall in batting powerplay overs as batsmen think they have to hot the ball harder.

The 200 came up at the end of the 33rd over and at the end of the batting powerplay Yorkshire were 209-4 after adding 32 runs for the loss of two prized scalps.

Adil Rashid produced a late flurry as his wristy shots found the gaps until he was bowled by Daggett for 25 in the 36th over. Gary Ballance (15) was caught at deep square trying to club a long hop from Daggett, Azeem Rafiq (1) was caught at mid-off driving at the same bowler and Brophy was stumped off Hall. Daggett finished with 4-54 as Yorkshire lost a clutch of wickets adding 85 runs in the last 10 overs of the innings.

MATCH PREVIEW

Yorkshire's hopes of qualification from Group C of the Clydesdale Bank 40-over are purely mathematical, but the task now is to build momentum ahead of the crucial LV=CC tie next week against Derbyshire and their first Finals Day appearance on 25 August.
