MATCH REPORT
Warwickshire beat Yorkshire by 55 runs to book their place in the semi-finals of the CB40 competition beneath the gathering Scarbados gloom with 3.5 overs left.
The Tykes were chasing a challenging 214 to win the CB40 opener of this year's Scarborough Festival and got off to the worst possible start when Adam Lyth was trapped lbw by Neil Carter before a run was on the board.
Joe Root (1) was bowled off the inside edge after wafting a weary drive at Carter and Yorkshire were 6-2 in the third.
Lees rocked back and pulled Wright with force for his first boundary but after making 23 he skied a cross bat drive to Jim Troughton at mid-off to Carter's first ball back operating from the Trafalgar Square End. It was the left-armer's first one-day outing of the summer and he was making it pay.
Gary Ballance, captaining the Yorkshire side for the first time slog swept Piolet into the Popular Bank as he desperately tried to keep his side in the hunt. He met the introduction of Ian Blackwell with a straight six.
Jack Leaning, in debut, was bowled by Paul Best for 11 and Adil Rashid didn't trouble the scorers before being lbw to Piolet. Dan Hodgson stroked Piolet through cover for four as the light faded dramatically. Gary Ballance cracked Best for a legside pulled six and repeated the shot to pass fifty in 41 balls the 3 fours and 4 sixes.
Hodgson cracked a four through extra cover but was run out for 9. Yorkshire took their three over batting powerplay at 115-6 after 21 overs. If Ballance could still see the scoreboard he hadn't given up hope, but when he was caught on the midwicket fence by Rikki Clarke for 68 from 50 balls that hope had gone.
Carter picked up his fourth wicket when he bowled Iain Wardlaw.
I'm all for umpires providing play where possible but the conditions as rain fell and the light worsened were approaching farcical in a game where the result had been decided.
Steve Patterson and Oliver Hannon-Dalby provided some last wicket fun in Pyrah's absence as the fielders struggled more to see the ball than the batsmen, but the game had gone. The final blow from Patterson off Maddy found Rikki Clarke at long-on as Yorkshire were all out for 158 in 25.1 overs.
The rain had hit North Marine Road after only 11 overs were possible early on with Warwickshire 53-2 and Richard Pyrah will miss tomorrow's Championship fixture against Gloucestershire after reinjuring the left hand he broke at the start of the season while fielding.
Will Porterfield had pulled the only six of the match off Iain Wardlaw on his way to an unbeaten 27 from 30 balls and Tim Ambrose was 4 not out.
Steve Patterson had Varun Chopra strangled down the legside for 15 and Jim Troughton (1) was caught and bowled by Joe Root before the rain came.
On the resumption Porterfield skied Rashid and was caught by Dan Hodgson for 43 from 45 balls. Maddy swept Rashid for six and clipped Oliver Hannon-Dalby into the Festical marquee. Ambrose reached his fifty in 44 balls with his fifth boundary.
Ambrose swatted a full toss from Hannon-Dalby to Jack Leaning who spilled the chance but moments later Maddy found the hands of Root at long-on off Patterson and was on his way for 27 balls including 4 fours and 2 sixes. The Bears were 172-4 in the 26th over.
Warwickshire took their one over batting powerplay which yielded 15 runs. Rikki Clarke (1) was bowled by Patterson who finished with 3-25 and Steffan Piolet went the same way against Wardlaw, but Warwickshire had stormed to 211-6 from their 29 overs.
The innings had been driven by Tim Ambrose who ran off the pitch with an unbeaten 87 from 64 balls which included 9 fours and a six.
It was a total that was boosted to 213 by a Duckworth Lewis recalculation. It was a tough ask.

MATCH PREVIEW
The Scarborough Festival commences with what many may feel is a dead rubber against Warwickshire in a CB40 competition that Yorkshire Carnegie have failed to take by the scruff of the neck. But there are many reasons why this is still a match to take seriously.
Yes, the Tykes are out of contention in the competition, but their performance at FLt20 Finals Day in Cardiff is well worthy of at least a round of Scarborough applause.
Warwickshire require a win and will hope that Sussex lose to Kent to have any chance of progression to the semi-finals.
The last time the two sides met at North Marine Road was at the last-four stage in 2010. That day Warwickshire ran out victors. Can a young Yorkshire side gain a small revenge?
The team will not be the same one that stepped out in Cardiff as a number of bigger names are given a well earned breather. It gives Gary Ballance, who earned credit when captaining the Mid West Rhinos in Zimbabwe last winter, to take charge in this final 40-over game of the summer.
A number of young faces will play under Ballance and it's a chance for them to shine and gain experience. Let's hope the sun shines too.
And it's Scarborough - enough said!
