CB40 report: Sharks bite ends Tykes progress

Sharks celebrate

Yorkshire's CB40 campaign may be over for another year, but in a rain reduced encounter they gave the Sussex Sharks an early warning of their credentials in the shorter form of one-day cricket. The Sharks are Yorkshire's semi-finals day opponents in the first semi-final of the FLt20 Finals Day next weekend. The Sharks won the dress rehearsal by three wickets in a last ball thriller.

A Duckworth Lewis recalculation meant Sussex needed 207 inside 28 overs to win. Despite losing Luke Wright early when he chased a ball from Moin Ashraf and edged to Phil Jaques at slip, Sussex made a confident start.

Chris Nash reached his fifty with his 5th four as he glided Rashid through cover. He got there in 35 balls and also hit 2 sixes and his partnership for the second wicket with Ed Joyce began to take the game away from the Tykes.

Nash had reached fifty but his 39 ball innings of 53 ended when he skied Rashid to Gary Ballance at long-off to leave the Sharks requiring 103 in 12.4 overs. Murray Goodwin skied Pyrah to Ballance on the midwicket boundary and when Ed Joyce played a leading edge off Rafiq straight to Pyrah at short cover Sussex were 127-4 (exactly the same as Yorkshire had been earlier).

Sussex needed 75 from 8 overs and then only 9 runs came from overs 23 and 24 and then Rashid conceded just 5 in the next as spin took control. With 3 overs left 37 runs were needed under bright Headingley sunshine (there's a first time for everything this summer). Michael Yardy lofted Rafiq to Root at long-off. Ben Brown hit over long-on for a maximumk and 27 runs were needed from 2 overs.

Will Beer drove through Lyth at mid-off for 4, but Bresnan found his yorker next ball and then Brown smashed a full toss to Root at deep midwicket. It was 22 from 9 balls.

Beer paddle swept Bresnan for 4, picked up a single, Khan drove a single to cover and 16 were needed from the final six balls.

Rafiq bowled and Khan swung him away for 6 and 4 to leave 6 required from 4. 4 from the next three balls meants Sussex needed 2 to win from the last and the ball was squirted through point with the field in to see the Sharks home by three wickets.

Earlier the rain had come after 4 overs with Yorkshire 14-0. The match restarted at 3.50pm and was reduced to 28 overs-a-side. Chris Liddle yorked Phil Jaques (18) before Joe Root pulled and reverse swept his first two balls for four and Gale struck Monty Panesar over long-on for six as the Tykes took to their task after the restart.

Gale and Root added 75 for the second wicket before Gale walloped Luke Wright to Chris Liddel at deep midwicket, but Yorkshire were storming along at 108-2 after 16.1 overs. Gale had made 43 from 55 balls including 3 fours and 2 sixes he'd smashed over long-on off Monty Panesar.

Joe Root looked in fine fettle as he stroked 4 fours and a six over midwicket off Wright in his 41 from 26 balls. When he caught and bowled by Chris Nash and Gary Ballance (2) was caught behind off Liddle the score had slipped to 127-4 after 18.1 overs.

Adam Lyth made 19 before hitting Khan to Liddle at deep square who held a very good low catch.

Tim Bresnan (27 from 23 balls) crashed Khan over cover for six, but shortly after cracking Yardy for two boundaries he was lbw to the same bowler. Richard Pyrah (6) hit Liddle to Joe Gatting at long-on and Adil Rashid (8) edged Khan behind.

Rafiq cleared the front leg and deposited Liddle high into the West Stand off the opening ball of the final over. A couple of balls later he played a reverse pull that ran down to the third man fence as Yorkshire ended on 200-8, a challenging score, but not quite challenging enough.
