CLt20: Yorkshire warmup up with Stallions win

Wanderers Stadium

Yorkshire started the on-field action with a 23 run win over Sialkot Stallions after making 146-7 thanks to 62 from Andrew Gale and quickfire cameos from Adam Lyth (28 from 13) and Adil Rashid (22 from 16). Rashid then bagged 3-20 as a typically feisty display in the field quashed the Stallions chances.

Albeit a warmup match ahead of Yorkshire's first real game against Uva Next on Tuesday there was a lot at stake as both sides prepared to challenge for berths in the main CLt20 draw.

After winning the toss Gale made 62 in 55 balls including 6 fouts and a short-arm jabbed six and was only dismissed in the final over when trying to get the strike.

Phil Jaques (8), Joe Root (4) had briefly kept the skipper company at the top of the order. Adam Lyth looked in excellent touch as he scored 28 in 13 balls. Ballance steadied the ship with 14, but it was Adil Rashid with 22 from 16 deliveries that provided the late impetus.

Rashid smashed Rana Naved thirty yards over the midwicket boundary and followed up with a sweetly timed clipped four, but he was bowled with the first ball of the final over, Gale run out and Azeem Rafiq bowled as the last over yielded little.

For the Stallions, Bhatti picked up three wickets for 20 runs in his four overs. Umaid Asif, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Qaiser Abbas claimed a wicket each. Skipper Shoaib Malik went wicketless and conceded 23 runs in his three overs.

In reply, the Stallions could only manage 123-6, as Yorkshire put in a typically aggressive display in the field. Faisal Naved top-scored for the Stallions with a 27-ball 28. Haris Sohail (27) and Qaiser Abbas (24) were the only other batters to get 20-plus runs for Sialkot.

Adil Rashid, who picked up three wickets in his four overs, was the pick of the Yorkshire bowlers. Steve Patterson picked up two wickets in his four overs.

Yorkshire team today: Gale (c), Jaques, Root, Lyth, Ballance, Rashid, Hodgson (wk), Rafiq, Sidebottom, Patterson, Ashraf

Brief scores: Yorkshire 146/7 in 20 overs (Andrew Gale 61, Adam Lyth 28, Bilawal Bhatti 20/3) beat Sialkot Stallions 123/6 in 20 overs (Faisal Naved 28, Haris Sohail 27, Adil Rashid 20/3)

After four increasingly demanding training sessions the Tykes will test their wits against the Pakistan t20 champions.

Sialkot boasted five Bradford League players in their squad and are competing in Pool A of the Karbonn Smart CLt20 qualifying alongside Hampshire and Auckland Aces.
