Alex Lees, who captained Yorkshire Academy in a match they nearly turned on its head

A last-day fightback saw Yorkshire Academy almost beat their opposite numbers at Durham under the captaincy of Alex Lees, above - and important positives were knocks of 74 and 67 by debutant Ben Elvidge.

Rain curtailed play on Day 1, but a start was made at 4.25 pm, and the Academy had lurched to 143-7 by the close. A bowler friendly pitch saw Calum Harding trouble the early batsmen - Lees, Andrew Gorrod and Jack Hughes all going cheaply.

Yet there were positives: Elvidge, of Flixton Cricket Club, scored a sound 74 - his work off the back foot looking very sound - and Billy Root dug in to score a valuable 30.

Fortunately, the tail wagged on Day 2. Elvidge took the opportunity of a good batting track to have a useful partnership with James Wainman, 14, and a ninth-wicket partnership took the Academy to 238 - Zafran Ali and debutant Graham Whiles from Knaresborough CC putting on 36.

Both Durham openers fell to left-arm seamers James Wainman and Zafran Ali, and 56-2 looked good for a time. Durham skipper Ryan Pringle and Graham Clark shared a third-wicket partnership of 137, but Hughes's fine throw ran out Clark for 49 . Wainman clean bowled the aggressive Pringle, and Durham eventually declared on 243-8.

Yorkshire's second innings saw fine knocks from the impressive Elvidge, 67, Root, 60, Lees. 35, and Hughes. 31 . Set 263 to win, Durham were confined to 193-9, Wainman, Ali and Graham Whiles all taking two wickets. At 176-6 with Pringle out for 76 and Bradford-born Usman Arshad for 26, Durham could have lost. The last Durham pair held out for five overs - and ended up 60 behind.

A splendid fightback in a match which initially Durham controlled saw Yorkshire in charge.
