Game of forfeits leaves Yorkshire under weather
News categories
Beneficiary Gerard Brophy, pictured, ran to an undefeated 65, but Yorkshire Second Eleven were saved by the weather and were lucky to escape with a draw after a wretched game of forfeits that was their Championship match with Northamptonshire at Headingley Carnegie.
Two forfeits set up a Yorkshire target of 305 to chase off 80 overs, and they were 138-5 with Brophy still on the bridge when the rain returned and the game went down.
Only 35 minutes of play were possible on Day 1, 96 overs being lost. Another 30 were claimed by the weather on Day 2, so it was no wonder that Northamptonshire were still batting in their first innings come the third morning.
Their 293-7 by the close of Day 2 featured two stands of 102 for the first wicket and 113 for the fourth compiled by the first five batsmen - the only failure being veteran David Sales, who was bowled by Steven Patterson for a single. The best of the Yorkshire bowlers was David Girling, who followed up his fine performance in the previous match with 3-39.
The two coaches played the forfeits game on the third morning. The visitors batted on for four overs to take four batting-bonus points as they passed the 300 mark, and the declaration and double forfeits challenged Yorkshire to make 305 to win their first Championship match of the season.
The target seemed eminently gettable, but bowlers led by the much travelled David Burton - Northamptonshire is his seventh county - saw to it that the hosts did not really get going. Even Adam Lyth was subdued, and that’s saying something, his 38 taking 93 balls.
Joe Sayers scored two off 23, Alex Lees eight off 30, Dan Hodgson a duck in eight and Girling faced 40 balls without getting off the mark. Brophy, batting against his old county, compiled his 65 in 99 balls, and was the only one to make victory look possible.
The fifth wickets fell as tea beckoned, and the Yorkshire innings looked all but over. Left-hand spinner Gurman Randhawa then entered the fray, and saw that it was not so as he partnered Brophy in a 28-run stand in 40 minutes of the last session.
The light had deteriorated, and the umpires decided that it was not good enough for play. Two or three inspections suggested no improvement, and there was a touch of drizzle in the air. The match was called off as a draw. A lucky escape? We will never know.
Two Championship matches remain left in the Seconds’ season - away to Leicestershire next week and at Worcester the following week. Surely Yorkshire can win one of them? Two victories would be even nicer!
