Geldart maiden century keeps Seconds in fight

A maiden century for Callum Geldart, pictured, was a big positive to take from Yorkshire’s nine-wicket defeat by Nottinghamshire in their Second Eleven Championship clash at Barnsley.

Yorkshire fought back after following on 297 runs behind on first innings. They passed the total needed to avoid the innings defeat, and took the visitors into the last hour of the three-day match, leaving them 56 to make to win off the dozen overs remaining.

It seemed unlikely that this would be so when Yorkshire collapsed in their first innings from 27-2 to 27-6 in nine balls after Nottinghamshire had rattled up 481 in 101 overs - thanks to a double-century opening partnership between Akhil Patel and Sam Wood and century partnerships for the third and fifth wickets between Ali Brown, veteran refugee from the Oval Brownhats, and Mattheus Wessels and Wessels and Michael Robson.

Yorkshire rallied, thanks to a half-century on Championship debut from Eddie Wilson, the second young wicket-keeper to appear in the team this season, and the last four wickets added 160 after the early alarms.

The White Rosebuds made a better fist of it second time around when occupying the crease was the order of the day. Geldart’s maiden century, a 50 from Alex Lees and a second-wicket partnership of 170 from the pair in two minutes under three hours were followed by almost another half-century from Jack Hargreaves as Yorkshire reached a creditable 352

It was only a matter of time before the formalities were completed. Seven fours from the bats of Patel and Wessels, coupled with a triplet of four byes caused by awkward bounces, led to the inevitable victory for the visitors.

We have a week’s break before the next Championship match - three days in Coventry against Warwickshire. Next week the Seconds venture to Metropolitan Kent to play a joint team from Kent and Northamptonshire in a four-day game which seems to have become an annual fixture. It will be a toughening-up experience for the young players.
